I agree...I think it's slightly tacky. It's like telling guests you only want cash for wedding presents. But at the same time...there is no rules with destination weddings so you gotta do what you gotta do. I do however think that there are many beautiful resorts for weddings that are less money and that should be considered. I would have loved to go to Fiji and get married... but that is several thousand dollars and I knew my family and friends couldn't afford it. I think you need to look at your priorities...do you want all your friends and family in the same place for a week together which in my opinion is the purpose of a DW or do you want the most expensive resort that people equate to the most beautiful (not necessarily true) as your backdrop for your wedding. I don't think you can blame people for wanting to find less expensive alternatives...maybe they honestly can't afford $2000+ for a week's vacation per person. Either way it's your call and if people won't stay at your resort then just be accepting of it.

I had the same problem in trying to find a resort. Something we could afford, somewhere they were offering good wedding packages. And of course how many guest was the resort allowing me included in the package (some resort say your allowed 6 guest and the 7th guest on ward is 30$)

I finaly found a resort I felt people would enjoy. I sent my invites with the resort name. No one really wants to be at another resort without us. The whole point of your guest wanting to go to a DW is the whole week!

If any of your guest don't want to spend the extra 100$ or so to stay at the same resort then I don't think they really want to be at your wedding as suppose to thinking it's a perfect excuse for a vacation!

I dont' think asking people to pay for the guest pass is tacky. My first choice for a resort was one of the RIU resorts in Jamaica. However, they are also relatively pricey for my guests and I knew they would just stay at relatives' houses or cheaper resorts (I have a lot of family in Jamaica). The problem with RIU is unless 80% of the guests stay at the resort, they will CANCEL your wedding -- forget day passes.

So when you have a situation like the one above, how is it unreasonable to simply say if you are coming to the wedding you must plan on staying at the resort? As for priorities, I am not above having no one there if they could not afford it; better that than me not getting married at all because people chose to do things their own way. Furthermore, how many people who paid for day passes also paid the same amount of money towards the people who DID decide to stay at the resort you were at? I don't think it is fair to pay for day passes for people who stayed at cheaper resorts while the people who invested more to stay at the same resort pay full price with no breaks.

my exact wording was "We will be staying at the Paradisus Palma Real.

****If you will not to be staying at the Paradisus Palma Real, you will need to purchase a day pass in order to attend the wedding festivities. The day pass must be paid by you at the front desk once you arrive at the resort. Day passes are about $24.00 USD per person. If you are not staying at the resort for at least the day of the wedding and do not purchase a day pass, you will not be allowed to enter the resort, nor attend the wedding.****''

i dont think this is tacky. and whoever thinks it is, i honetsly dont care. the point of the pass if that the resort doesnt want just anyone wondering around the hotel who isnt stayign there. and when you think of it, it makes sense. i wont want people who didnt pay for the hotel to stay there; there has to be some type of organization of letting outsiders in. and the people who are not staying at the resort intend on makign this their own vacation and realize they wont see me probably until the wedding so its not an issue of them paying to come see me, its them payign to get into another resort. and my guests understood this. and 24.00 isnt much compared to what they are saving for not staying in the resort. and i really dont want to be responsible for who comes and doesnt and who to pay for so let the guests deal with the fee when they walk in...and thats that....

  • 2 weeks later...

I think it goes back to you can't please everyone so please yourself (as there are a lot of different opinions posted here).

My fiance and I booked the Majestic Colonial and gave everyone 15 months advance warning of approx cost. I also stated that I would prefer if everyone stayed at the one resort so we could all spend time together (our 2 families are meeting for the first time). AND that if they chose to stay elsewhere, they would have to pay a fee to enter the all inclusive resort.

I planned my wedding knowing some people would not be able to make it and I am ok with that. In my mind, I am getting married and the 2 most important people will be there (myself and my fiance). If others can't make it, life goes on. I won't let it ruin my wedding vacation.
