Cake Ribbon question?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if any of the ladies know how much ribbon would be required for a simple 2 layer cake? I'm going to assume it'll be a fairly small cake since it will feed up to 24 guests. The reason I ask is because I want to add crystal banding but it's about $75/yd.eek.gif Also, what size ribbon looks good? Should it be 1/2", 3/4", or 1" or largerhuh.gif I know how to eat cake not to decorate it!

Here's a pic of what I would like my cake to look like

Any suggestions?

I don't have any advice on the amount you need, but I can tell you that having a ribbon made for a funny time while cutting the cake. We obviously couldn't cut through the ribbon and I couldn't get the knife under the piece of cake we cut to pull it out! Everyone was like, you can't cut a cake? It took like a full minute which felt like an eternity. Too funny! Anyway, just thought I'd give you a heads up!

if you want to err on the side of caution, a 12x18 cake should making about 54 servings (if you slice them 2x2). for this you would need about 6 ft. of ribbon (just to make sure you have enough).

in terms of the look, if you want it to be the same width as the ribbon in your picture, i'd say at least 1 1/2 in. if not 2. if your cake is only one layer though (the ones in your picture are two) you can cut that width in half so it's more proportioned.

i hope that makes sense!! if you are planning on doing your own cake or have anything you need help with, let me know! i have a small cake decorating business on the side and i've been working with ribbon on cakes for a while.
