I'm so pissed at my job...

Ugh, so I work at a restaurant while I'm trying to finish up college. It's a crappy job, but the schedule allows me to take classes during the day and work at night. I requested Saturday off because we are throwing a 30th birthday party for my brother. Well, I looked at the schedule today and they scheduled me to work any way! And, they gave someone else the day off who asked AFTER me. I can't find anyone to cover my shift and I'm basically screwed. I'm throwing the freaking party, how can I not go?

I can't call out sick because I have to work Fri and Sun, so its not like I'd have a mysterious illness that hits after I close Friday night and goes away before I open Sunday afternoon. And, I would just feel terrible calling out even though its not a good job. Besides they know now that I'm trying to find someone to cover my shift. No one can cover for me tho. sad.gif To top it off, I'm not supposed to have to work all three days of the weekend EVER. Its part of the deal we have from when I first got hired. So, not only didn't I get the day off I asked for, but I'm scheduled all three days.

Idk what to do. My brother and I are best friends. I'll be so sad if I have to miss the party and I think he will be too. Ugh. censored.gif

Yuck - what a crappy situation! Is there anyone who could maybe work a "double" for you...especially if you offered to pay them a little money for the inconvenience? Or you could offer to work all day Sunday in exchange.

Perhaps tell your manager that this day is very important to you and maybe they could run a person short. I know I would hate to miss my brother's birthday!

ugh talk to the boss or whoever makes the schedule. explain that you are hosting a party for a family member so obviously you need to be there. tell him it's at YOUR house and a million people are invited. make sure you tell him/her that YOU requested the day off FIRST. also mention that you're not supposed to EVER work all 3 days of the weekend. make it clear that you cannot under any circumstances come in that night and you need him to help you find a solution.

i dunno. how long ago did you request off?

That sucks. Well, I managed many a retail store over the years. If I screwed up someone's schedule and put them on when they clearly requested off, I would own up to the mistake, suck it up, and deal with being short-handed. It's not your fault that the manager screwed up your schedule. I would definitely not work!

Thanks girls. I have to work this afternoon, so I'm hoping I can work something out while I'm there. I requested the day off at least 3 weeks ago, maybe longer. Of course, the manager who does our scheduling is conveniently on vacation this week. So, he posted the schedule right before he left and got the heck out of there. lol I'm hoping the other manager will help me out, but in the past her response to people has been I don't do the schedule talk to the other guy. We'll see what she says since he won't be in.
