S. Maui Beach info..Help Please!

My Fiance and I are getting married on a beach in Wailea..very simple 10 minute ceremony. We are on a budget and I am trying to figure out how to have a small reception style gathering after the ceremony that is "us", fits our budget, and does not involve a bunch of catering and venue research. If we were back at home, we would be at the beach by our house with picnic tables and fire pits having a bbq.

I was wondering if anyone knows of beaches in south maui that have this option available (fire pits, bbq), for something like this after the sun goes down? Our wedding is at 5pm and I think the coordinator says the sun sets around 6:30. This would be perfect - we could have a bbq dinner, and maybe a fire or something with dancing on the beach. I dont know if this is a crazy idea or doable, but if anyone knows or has advice please help!

Hmmm.. I don't know of any particular place. If you do some research on Maui beaches they will tell you what types of facilities they have, such as picnic tables and BBQ pits. Unfortunately, some may have an early closing hour like Kamaole III is supposedly closed a 7:00 (I was looking at this spot as a possible BBQ location).

I also wanted to make sure that you knew about a new ordinance that went into affect last year. You aren't allowed alcohol on any of the Hawaii beaches, so that could possibly affect your festivities.

 

Maybe you could have a simple dinner at a coast side restaurant.

I figured..it might be too dark anyway..I was looking into renting a house for a day but the majority of homes for rent want a minimum stay of at least several nights which is understandable. Im looking into mulligans on the blue for now..I just want to be able to have dancing and a cake

Sorry I'm not familiar with Wailea so I don't know how far away this would be but there is a whole stretch of beaches near Lahaina along that main highway there that have bbq pits, grass areas, public bathrooms and such. It's really pretty around sunset. It's not really sandy beach but there's always people out there during the day surfing.

 

My dad is in that area all the time so I'll see if I can find out some more info about it.

I got Maui'd at 4pm on Po'olenalena Beach (Love Beach) just north of Wailea. It was unbelievably windy, which made for some amazing and few not-so amazing pictures.

 

I, too, had a tight budget since my DH and I were footing the entire bill. We were able to keep wedding ceremony costs at $1000 and the reception under $4500. Our wedding reception for 25 guests was at the Five Palms Restaurant in Kihei which was right on the beach. There is a beautiful grassy knoll right beside the restaurant....that I heard I could have had the ceremony on with no additional cost. That would have saved me ~$500 and 20 mins of drive time between ceremony and reception.

 

In hindsight, I would have preferred to use that time to take more pics with the photographer. In fact, I would have preferred to get married on the grassy knoll (near the bar) as opposed to listening to my nephew complain about the heat on the beach while waiting for the ceremony to begin.

 

I guess we all have 20-20 hindsight.

When we were doing our research we had thought of doing the bbq stuff near the beach as well, but like others mention, a lot of Maui ordinances make it difficult.

We actually chose Mulligan's on the Blue for our reception and I can assure you, it was fantastic! They have a very laid-back feel to them but still keep a niceness to them that I loved for our reception. The building is very old but they do a good job of maintaining it...the age of the building just really gives it a welcoming feel IMO. Our guests couldn't stop raving about how much fun they had...we had a DJ, which unlike other places that close down by 10pm, played until nearly 1am. If you decide to go with Mulligan's I think you'll be very satisfied with your choice! Good Luck and Congratulations!

thank you april...I actually contacted them to ask for their catering menu before I even posted this, as an option for a reception location..Im considering going with them thanks!
