Dreams Riviera Cancun - Brides post here (new thread)

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am curious about other brides' experiences getting married when perhaps there was another event going on at DRC.

I was just contacted by our WC Veronica who let me know that all of a sudden there will be a large party at the resort on May 14th, the same night as our wedding. She suggested we move our reception from the pool deck (which we have had reserved for over a year now) to the beach (which we do NOT want to do). She said it would give our party more privacy.

I have told her no, but now I am freaking out and feeling very bridezilla. What if some huge group is on the other side of the pool or something and their event drowns out our DJ and reception? We are a larger party, 66 people including my fiance and I, so we will be pretty loud ourselves. But I am not sure yet how large this other party might be. ugh. I feel really uneasy suddenly, after letting go of stress and trusting that everything would be smooth like other past brides have assured all of us on this thread.

Any brides of the past have any encouraging words or experience with other large parties happening at the same time as their receptions?

It is not like I want to be the sole focus of the hotel or anything, I just want the reception the way it has been set for over a year, and I want to be able to hear our music and speeches over any other events going on nearby. That is all I ask.

thanks for letting me vent on here. I am usually really mellow about all this, and I know it will work out fine, but I just get super angry thinking of worst case scenarios with this new development at the hotel for my wedding weekend.

Any thoughts on this are welcome! Thanks.

I expeirienced this when I went on my site visit. There was a wedding happening on the pool deck and then by the main pool there was a Nacho libre event going on! Not cool do not want that for my wedding.  Granted it was for a corporate event but still.  Plus they weren't able to let me know if I was going to be the only event going on the day/wekend.  Major turnoff! Sorry that they have to tell you this now.

Thanks for the info Ursula!

Are you getting married in 2012 as well?

Was I correct with the sun setting at 7:00 pm?

I'm debating to have my reception at 4:30 or 5pm now... My fiance and I really want to spend some time at the cocktail hour and we are worried if we get married at 5pm we might miss it since we will be out with the photographer taking photos. What do you think? How long is the ceremony usually? 1 hour?

I think you have to get there 4 days before if you are going to have a legal marriage.  I am getting legally married before I get to Mexico so we are only getting there 2 days before.  Well if you are going to be there til the following friday then we will for sure be there at the same time! We will definitely have to meet up.  Congratulations to you too!!

Sorry for just getting back to you, I'm still trying to understand the posting items and the times, so I'm just seeing that you replied. But YEA....Sorry about that lol, I didn't want to get later in the month for personal reason, (lady time) and first weekend didn't work, father in laws birthday. We are hopefully going to stay about 9-10 days, not sure but I think we have to be there 4 days in advance for the blood test right?  Are they strict on that? That might present an issue for my witnesses having to be there so far in advance. We will probably be there from the Thursday before the wedding to the Friday after so hopefully, will be seeing you there!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Congratulations Aimee!! Our wedding date is May 18, 2012 at 5:00.  I couldn't decide between 4 or 5 but then thought the lighting would be better for the pictures if we did it at 5.  What day are you getting to the resort? We will be there from May 16-23.

For all the May brides out there when is the best time for a sunset ceremony?

My travel agent put down 4pm, but I read online sunset in May is around 7pm?? I know there's talk of this in previous posts but of course now I can't find them wacko.gif

I'm thinking more 5 or 5:30?? I'd love to hear your feedback.

Is it easier to just get married before? I have read that some brides have done this and I was wondering if I should get married before, which would change my actual anniversary date but I promised my father I wouldn't run off and elope and take away the job of walking me down the aisle (my kid sister did this) so I thought it would be ok to just get married there but I've heard there is some lad in getting your marriage liscence back....sometimes a year later!!! I hope this is not the case.  Then I heard its only a few weeks, can anyone clear this up for me?

Hi Sunshine,

I completely understand where you are coming from - choosing the resort was BY FAR the most stressful part of the wedding.  I agonized over it for months: how much is too much to ask people to pay?  What if the food isn't great?  What if the rooms aren't nice?  What if the drinks suck?  What if what if what if?  The actual wedding I couldn't have cared less about, I just wanted everyone to be happy.

Here's my take on it:

We stayed at the resort at the end of last April (2010) with my family (my parents already had the trip planned before we got engaged) and my FH and I rented a car to check out other resorts that were recommended to us. In the end, after driving all over the Riviera Maya, we still went with Dreams RC.  Two of my sisters who came with us have kids (so 4 people in one of the rooms) and the bathrooms didn't bother them.  To clarify, the actual BATHROOM (where the toilet is) has a door.  Yes, it's a frosted glass one.  But there IS a door!  Same with the shower.  The sinks and bathtub are in the open space.  The only situation where this might be a problem would be if you were staying with a complete stranger or had a teenager staying in the same room.  The rooms are beautiful, otherwise.

The food was amazing when we were there and only one of my sisters got sick (we were 9 adults and 3 kids in total) and I'm pretty sure it was because of all the alcohol and the food that she's not used to eating.  Don't forget that even in Canada or the US, if you go for Mexican, French, etc food, people get sick!  It doesn't mean the food was bad, it's just that we're not used to the richness/oil/fat of some of the dishes!  So maybe the recent reviews were just from a bad batch of food or not even, I don't know.

The towel game happens at every resort I have ever been to - I have yet to stay somewhere where people don't try to pull this.  It's frustrating, for sure.  We didn't have a problem with it, we even got the palapas by the pool some days, but we weren't there at peak season (and won't be again for the wedding) and we didn't really care where our chairs were.  The setup of the pools is such that no chair is really in a horrible spot.

I will agree that the noise is an issue.  We brought our iTouch that has a "white noise" app on it, so we were fine (there's a iPod docking clock in the rooms) but my mom and two of my sisters wore earplugs.

Also, there really isn't a ton to do in the evenings - the Lobby bar has live entertainment for a few hours, which is fun but that's about it.  We were fine with going to bed early on that trip but this time, we just plan on making our own party wherever we go!  We'll be enough people that I don't think it will be a problem.

In the end, my FH pointed out:  People will complain about things no matter where we choose, so let's choose a place where we know most people will be happy with most of it.  That's the best we can do.  We knew we loved the resort and yes, it was a bit pricier than we wanted, but I haven't been nervous for a single day since booking!

Not sure if this will help at all, but that was my experience!  It's awful making choices for other people so I completely empathize with you :(

Good luck and I'm so sorry this was so long!

L.

HI ladies - just got finished reading some of those negative reviews for that last week in March - and am a bit discouraged about using this resort for my wedding.
Not so much for the food - I have a feeling that was just due to a  bad batch of something. But some of the other complains with regards to the no door on the bathrooms as well as the massive battle for chairs at the pool/beach. I will probably be having some couples coming with younger children and the bathroom situation is kind of concerning. Even if there weren't children - I still find it odd that there's no door on the bathroom sad.gif - or maybe i read this wrong? Maybe its not with all the suites?
The towel game seems to be very discouraging also - apparently if you're not there at 5/6am to put your town down you're SOL!
There's been comments about very little entertainment in the evenings too.
Also - apparently the ceilings/floors are very thin and there's been complaints of excessive noise when someone moves a chair.
I know these concerns are non-wedding related - but I want my guests to be comfortable and happy at the resort. Picking this resort is mostly for our benefit wedding-wise

but i also want to pick a resort that all my guests should be happy at too. We're really not those snoooty traveler types that expect everything to be perfect. But I'm sure you all know the stress of picking a resort just for you and your hunny is a lot different than picking a resort for 20+ of your closest family and friends.

Any who can offer some input would be great!

Hi Sarah!

I'm thinking maybe a 5pm wedding is better as well. It seems as though its what most brides are scheduling

Looks like we might see each other! We arrive the day you get married aww!

If you don't mind me asking, how far a long are you with your wedding planning? Have you booked any vendors, photographers etc??

Sarcrook,

here are the measurements for the Gazebo:

The gazebo is about 3 meters high (to the beginning of the arch) x  4.30 meters from side to side.

I was thinking about doing our own centerpieces too but I didn't want to carry down so much stuff.  Deco Cancun is only charging me 50 per centerpiece which 3 vases with flowers in it, so it's not that bad.

I would love to see your centerpiece though, sounds really beautiful and creative.

We are doing our own Centerpieces...I found old glass bottles (in the color purple - one of our wedding colors) and we are putting three on each table with a floral light in them - and clear crystal rocks scatterd..simple.  I'm kind of going with "A Message In A Bottle" theme - our "name cards" will be littles messages in a bottle..hence the bottles as center pieces.  Then the table numbers are gonna look as if they were old "messages in a bottle"!

If you want pics let me know - I can give you more detail!!
