We are also considering a symbolic ceremony to avoid any extra hassles and blood tests. I'm just concerned that it won't seem as special if we are already married. Is everyong going to "celebrate" the legal ceremony? I almost don't want to make a big deal of it at all, this way it won't feel real until we are on the beach saying our vows. Does anyone else feel this way?

I have the same concern. We have decided to make it legal at home after our symblic wedding so that it will feel "real" to us and our guests in Mexico. We are also doing our best not to tell anyone that we are having a legal marriage back here b/c I got a negative reaction when I first mentioned it to someone. Plus, I don't want our guests to have a skewed view on the wedding if they knew it wasn't real.
We decide against the legal ceremony mostly b/c of the cost but I am nervous about the blood test and I have heard horror stories about how long it takes to get your legal certificate from Mexico.

So, you don't have to provide a marriage certificate in Mexico? I just assumed we would do it prior to Mexico. I hadn't thought about doing it afterwards. But that is something to think about. Just curious, why do you prefer the idea of having the legal ceremony afterwards? Then when you get married...you aren't really Mr. and Mrs...right away. I wish it wasn't this hard!!

We are also have our legal wedding after when we come back home. We will still feel like husband and wife as our symbolic wedding is what is important to us in front of all of our friends and family. We both felt like if we did it before we left, while in Mexico it will feel strange. We too aren't telling anyone what our plan is bc too many people have too much to say ;0)

We got legally married in March and are having our wedding November. And it still feels very real!! I'm more excited about the wedding than I was on our legal day. I don't think it takes a thing away from the wedding as you are still committing to love eachother forever in front of all your friends and family. All of our family and close friends already know and i honestly don't think it is taking anything away from the actual day. It's actaully relieving me of stress and nerves to be honest! We will however celebrate our anniversary on the legal day since they are so far apart.

Our resort needs our marriage certificate to prove we are actually married. Since we are doing symbloic, they don't want to lose money on blood tests and ministers fee...therefore they need proof of our union. This is why I said it depends on your resort because I'm sure some don't require it at all, ours did.

I thought you had to be legally married before having the symbolic ceremony in Mexico. Have you confirmed you can have it after? If so, I'd love to do the same thing. I rather it be after. I want my destination wedding to be the first time I say 'I do'.

We are going to do the symbolic ceremony and then get married once we get back. Our resort hasn't asked for any kind of proof or anything on the symbolic marriage.

We are actually debating coming back home thru Vegas and having a private just the 2 of us legal ceremony at a chapel there.... just to make the legal part more fun!

I was trying to locate a minister down there to make the ceremony more personal and she actually recommend that I don't get legally married in Mexico as she has seen it to be very hard for brides to obtain additional certified copies of their marriage for various reasons. So that is something to think about down the road too.....

My uncle who is a minister in the states will be doing our symbolic ceremony in Mexico, my resort said that was fine, we plan for him to also do our legal ceremony once we get back from Mexico. Thanks ladies for the comments, I now see I have a few more questions for the resort.
