Do you think they all work from recipes for each dish? I heard them mention recipes and I wondered how some of these "home cooks" knew how to make intricate dishes on their own. I'm not sure how much "creativity" is really used on this show when it comes to cooking if they are just following recipes!

They've mentioned recipes in past seasons if memory serves correct. I'm sure the recipes are provided so there is guideline of what is supposed to be included in the dish. I don't think the emphasis on this show is creativity so much as execution. Top Chef is more about creativity in cooking. This show is more about the execution factor and the ability to run a restaurant. From what I know restaurants have "recipes" so all of the cooking staff can carry out dishes that are similar in taste... like I go I go to a specific restaurant because i like the way a certain dish of theirs is cooked. I'm sure to keep that consistency there has to be some sort of ingredient guideline right?

 

But besides that, I do think the show has become extremely staged. I mean it's always been to a degree, but the first episode was so overly staged it was almost a turn off. Like everything with JP seems staged, the whole thing of Chef Ramsey emerging from a cloud of smoke on the first ep was silly, etc.

I think the restaurant where they do the dinner services has specific recipes - like that meat wrapped in oastry they kept making last year (I can't remember the name of it) They make the same things every dinner service for the restaurant - just a matter of them getting it together to do it right and as a team. It's the challenges that are supposed to show their creativity and what they would do if they were to get their own restaurant - it's not a "cooking show" the way Top Chef seems to be. I think this is more to see who can handle running a kitchen with an angry man screaming at you....thus Hell's Kitchen lol.

 

I think a lot of the chefs could handle the recipes, with the exeption of the diner guy who made the sausage gravy - not that I don't like sausage gravy, but it's not in the same league as the other stuff.

I finally finished watching the both parts of the first episode. I agree with others. While these shows always seemed somewhat staged...this time it seemed over the top.

 

I am not sure who is going to be "good" given how the first two episodes went. But the one girl (Suzanne?) who kept telling Amanda (?) that the chicken was raw and to cook it longer seems to have her act together. I also agree Kevin (relative to the other guys) looks like he at least knows what he is doing.

 

It is cool to see Heather come back. And, the fact that they brought Robert back as a competitor put an interesting spin on things.

 

Joseph is just scary...and seems just a bit crazy. I do not know how much of it is an act or is being over-played. But, wow, he really needs to relax and calm down. I mean how hard is it answer "first nominee and why"...and I think answering it doesn't make you anyone's bitch. Crazy.... Van also seems a little bit crazy, but he looks relatively normal compared to Joseph. I think they both need to go.

 

I cannot believe Tanielle thought she did good and should not be nominated. I realize it is worse becuase she served raw shrimp to a pregnant woman...but no one really wants to eat raw shrimp in a scampi. Plus she got her team behind. Lovely and Amanda were not much better between the fish and the chicken.

 

It looks like it is going to be an interesting season.

Okay, just watched the first one....holy crap 120 min!!! Jeez like a movie.

 

Anyhow FI and I watch together, one of the few shows we both like.

 

Seriously.. what is wrong with Joseph? :WTF: is wrong with him??

This is considered "our" show, as DH and I have such different taste in tv LOL -- I do believe some of it is staged, but regardless, I end up getting stressed out every episode! I keep thinking, how would I react if he was in my face calling me a donkey??!

LOL. The "donkey" name calling always makes me laugh. I am kind of wondering if that whole thing with Joseph was staged. Or maybe not staged, but if he went on the show with the intent of getting in Ramsey's face like that. Some sort of pre-meditated scenerio. It was just so weird.

This is one of the few shows FI and I can watch together. Now that I think of it, we seem to watch cooking shows together....

Top Chef, Kitchen Nightmares, Hell's Kitchen, and Iron Chef America lol

FI and I love this show. We were such big fans of last season, so we just spent a weekend at the Borgata in AC, just so we could eat in the new restaurant Fornelletto. Danny (last season winner) came out and talked to us for quite a while and took pics. He says Gordon Ramsay really is like that, but chef Scott is even worse off camera. Danny is such a cool guy but I think he got screwed. He had no say in the menu or decor of Fornelletto, and just works there as a line cook, has no authority, ect. The show leads viewers to believe it will be "theirs" for at least a year.
