Hi brides, Does anyone know what the best cake flavour and icing option is? I don't have a list with the options, just the catalogue of the various styles of cakes you can get with our Presidential package.

Our cake (which was supposed to be a three tier of vanilla, strawberry and chocolate) ended up being two tiers of vanilla and the middle tier was vanilla with small bits of fresh strawberries mixed into the vanilla frosting. The whole thing tasted a lot like the vanilla/white cake that often appeared at the buffets, so there wasn't really anything novel or unique about the taste experience. I think I mentioned in my review that if I had it to do all over again, I would ask if there is an option that is unique to weddings or a completely different flavour than the cakes/slices that appear at the buffets.

I need some suggestions from previous brides!  Our ceremony is at 4:00 and I would like our reception to start at 6:00 - I have the presidential package however I don't want my guests to be bored before the reception.  Are drinks a far walk from the presidentail ceremony site?  Could guests who want to walk down and get a drink do so, or is it actually pretty far?  We have 35 people coming to our wedding and don't want them to be waiting for the reception to start but I also don't really want to pay to have more cocktails after the cocktail party...any advice or suggestions please!!

They could walk, but I wouldn't recommend it, it's pretty far from the Presidential location to any of the bars, except for the Disco, which won't be open.  We paid extra to have the lounge furniture set up so our guests would have a place to sit.  We probably spent about an hour doing pictures and my guests enjoyed the appetizers and champagne and just mingled.

our ceremony is at 2 and our reception starts at 6 - we are kind of jerks and have lots of downtime between - but are providing an open national bar. which works out to be around $180/hour.

Mrs Justin – we didn’t even ask about flavours, I just went with chocolate so can’t comment on any others but I highly recommend the chocolate!

Alo680 – The palapa is too far guests to walk, we had a similar time frame in between ceremony and reception (ceremony at 5 reception starting at 7.15) and we decided to buy some extra bottles of sparkling wine as one glass was never going to be enough for our party! I think they were $150MXN each, and we got about 10 more bottles, so not cheap but a lot cheaper than the open bar, and our guests just stayed at the ceremony spot with their wine while the Mariachi band were around. We had some group photos and then when we went our for our photos  they slowly started making their way up to the palapa from the main beach where we had our ceremony. It worked really well for us and no one was without a drink!

Hello all GS past brides and brides to be!  So I just spend three days combing through the last 98 pages of comments and questions, thanks so much to the past brides for all their reviews. What an awesome resource.  
 

I gotta say that so far my dealings with the resort haven't been the greatest and NOT because they take a long time to reply, as so many past brides have had problems with.  Their response time has been fine, Fernanda has been our contact person and she replies promptly, though perhaps due to her level of English her responses can be rather curt and perfunctory.  Not necessarily the customer service a jittery bride to be planning her wedding from afar really wants, but no matter...

 

After reading all the negative reviews about the DJ (these complaints go waaaay back to the early days of this thread YEARS ago, spanning up until it seems the last page or two of this entire thread) my biggest concern was the DJ.  My fiance and I thus decided that we're going to set up all our music on our laptop via iTunes, and have CD backups, etc.  I asked Fernanda about booking the sound system for our restaurant, she said that's fine but that we'd ALSO have to pay for a DJ because it's a rule. Seems arbtrary and quite fishy to me, considering brides before have been able to book the sound system but NOT the DJ.  Very disappointed at what we see is a blatant cash grab by the hotel. 

 

Not to mention that they charge you $300 USD if you want to book with an outside wedding photographer, which you've got to cough up in addition to paying your new photographer and paying for their one-day pass onto the resort. Fees, fees, fees...ridiculous.  No wonder the DJ and the onsite wedding photographer are so shitty (say many past GS brides on this messageboard), they really have no incentive to do a better job since their hotel has incoming brides by the balls.

None of this has left a very positive taste in my mouth and our wedding is only three months out in December.  Not impressed thus far...nothing seems very five-star about this experience. I hope I have better news to report after we get back.but as for now I definitely would not recommend this property to friends doing destination weddings.  Shoulda gone with Grand Sunset Princess!
