Dress shopping alone?

Recommended Posts

So my wedding is in less than a year and I have not tried on a single dress. My future mother-in-law lives in the same city of mine and says she wants to go with me really bad but always forgets our plans to go. (She has been battling with Alcoholism) My mother and sister wont be in Vegas until Labor Day weekend and it is only for two nights and my sister has made plans for the entire weekend, not upset about that it is a vacation for them not a trip to visit. So I am new to town and really have not made any close girlfriends yet. I want to fly home and spend a weekend looking but I want to know what I am doing. Pretty bad going dress shopping alone. =( What do you think? Has anyone done this? What about if I just look? :)

I don't think it's crazy - I think you could go solo, get some ideas, and then go with friends again when you are in your hometown. It depends on your personality, but if you know what looks good on you, you can find "the one" without anyone else's confirmation. And of course, the BDW brides will give you feedback too!

You know what, I fully support this! I was on my lunch break one day, and I walked by my local bridal salon. They were having a 50% sale off the rack so I just decided to walk in an ONLY try on dresses that were on sale (because I did have over 12 months at that point to look...). I went in by myself and the 5th dress I tried on was perfect. Later, I just took my mom and my MOH in to show them and they loved it! It was nice though going by myself I have to say. You might be surprised. It might be more relaxing.

And I think the whole point is not that I shopped spur of the moment, but that it was nice going alone. I was relaxed, calm, and didn't have five different voices going on. The ladies at the bridal salons are always/usually fun anyways and they hep you and compliment you too. I thought I would always want to do this extravagant weekend trip with the girls and go shopping, but I wouldn't change how I did it for anything.

I totally agree. Go by yourself first! I went to a couple of places and everyone was super friendly except some snotty girl at Davids Bridal (but what do you expect from the Old Navy of bridal boutiques). I actually bought my dress at Davids so I'm not dissing them, but they certainly don't have the service found at smaller places. Back to the point... I fell in love with my dress that day by myself then invited my mom, aunt and fmil to go back and look at the ones I had narrowed down. It would have been crazy if I had all of them throwing things at me if I didn't have an idea of what I already liked. This way really was the most fun for me. Good luck and have fun!!!

I went with girlfriends 3 times, and that was enough of that. They all had different opinions about what my dress should be and I didn't really feel like it was my decision. I've been shopping alone twice since then and I actually found the perfect dress in a stress free environment where the only opinion I heard was my own. Not only do I think it's not bad to go alone, I would recommend it.

Even for regular clothes shopping I like to go by myself if I am really seriously shopping--I feel when I shop with friends I have to be conscious not to take *forever* and have them bored waiting for me!

I've gone dress shopping twice with my sisters and twice on my own... Its fun to have company but as some of the girls have said--they do sway your original opinions etc., I think I will just continue to go on my own until I narrow it down to a few and then bring them with.

I went by myself the first time, and it was SO much fun! I went to a great salon, and the people there were great. I don't think there is anything wrong with going by yourself. You can always take pictures or bring a friend with you the next time you come back. Also, you will probably know yourself which one is "the dress" -- ultimately, it is your decision! When I finally chose my dress, I would have chosen it if I had a second opinion or not. Don't forget the sales people will be there too, so you won't really be alone. Have fun, and share pix when you return!

I went w/ my mom, sis and another bm my fiirst time and it was HORRIBLE. I bought a dress everyone liked, and I liked but not THE dress. They all had different opinions. I went shopping by myself and found THE dress.

I would definitely do it again by myself or at most bringing 1 person and one only
