Hairstyle and wind

It was recommended to me by my wedding planner that I have my hair styled up and away from my face for my wedding because it can get windy. I'm not too crazy about the idea and my fiance outright hates the idea. For the most part, I always wear my hair down (I have long hair) and I really don't like the way I look with my hair up. It's just not natural looking for me and neither of us thinks it compliments my face as well when my hair is up.

What are your recommendations? We're getting married on Po'olenalena beach at sunset in Sept. I know beaches get breezy but maybe I can just hairspray the crap out my hair and leave it down the way I have envisioned it.

I am feeling the exact same way. I would think an up do would fair worse in the wind, since if it gets blown around it could loosen and get sloppy. My solution is down with lots of volume/loose waves, and gathered to the side. Like a side pony, but down loose and brought in the front. That way I can do it myself, and it doesn't matter if it gets messy. You could easily go from all down, tio the side pony in 2 seconds. Here are my inspiration pics.

It's final. I am going to wear my hair down and if it's windy, so be it. At least I will feel like I look good. I'll just make sure the wind is blowing the hair back away from my face.

Estella, I love your idea. We're trying to keep this wedding low budget so spending $200+ to get my hair done, in a style I don't totally like, is not what I want to do. I am planning to do loose curls and that's it. I like the loosely tied to the side idea. Thanks for the tip!

Mdgirl76 - I just got married and wore my hair down because I hate the way I look with my hair up. I was glad with my decision because I thought it looked pretty *however* in retrospect, I wish I would have pulled some of it back. It was windy on the beach and hot. My hair would blow in my face in pictures and was kind of a pain. I think if you wear it partially up or back, that would be good, and just make sure you pin any lose hair down or it will end up in your face.. I used a lot of hair spray.. but apparently not enough..grr. best wishes :)

I initially was going to wear my hair up also concerned about wind, but my dress looked so much better with hair down that I got married a few weeks ago with my hair down and despite the wind, I'm glad I did it. I did have a little pinned back on both sides just to keep hair out of my face with loose waves and hairspray. The plan was to switch sides with the groom if the wind was blowing the wrong way, but when I got to the beach, the wind was blowing straight in my face and it worked out fine. I don't regret wearing my hair down.

I had a beach wedding and wore my hair down with just a little of the sides pulled back and pinned with orchids in it. It worked out great. The stylists in Maui are completely aware of the wind on the beach and style your hair accordingly. Long hair down on the beach looks the best in my opinion. I would not worry about it. Just make sure that you get a style that you are comfortable with.

I got maui'd at Po'olenalena Beach. You're my wedding location buddy!!!

I pulled the sides up and pinned them away from my face. I used a ton of hairspray and still some of it got away. Most of my hair was loosely curled and flowing down my back. It was amazingly windy at the time of the ceremony (4pm). I was able to photoshop out a few fly-aways. It was perfect for me. Even my veil looked amazing in the pics.

There were a couple of small orchids pinned to my hair at the beginning of the ceremony. By the time of the first dance, they were all gone.

Thank you for your reply sdnative222. I cannot wait to see the beach in person. It looks so amazing in photos!

I decided to have my hair professionally done, since they're more experienced with this sort of thing. I have a photo on my other computer of how I think I'll do my hair. Pulled back in a loose ponytail with loose curls and white flowers where it is tied. And yes, a TON of hairspray, gel, whatever it takes. My wedding will be at 5:30pm. It's just the two of us plus his sister, bil and their baby. The whole thing will be done, photos and all, by 6:30 and we're heading out for dinner afterwards. So I just need my hair to stay relatively in place until the photos are done. I'll be sure to get photos before heading outside too.

I soooo cannot wait. The wedding is exactly one month away!!!

I'm sure as your date gets closer you will get more and more excited. As for me, all the planning didn't get me ready for that last week before the ceremony. I don't know why, but those last 7 days were a whirlwind.

As for your hair, who is doing it? Are they coming to you or are you going to themhuh.gif I lucked out and found a stylist in South Kihei, just 1 minute north of my hotel. Her name is Robbie and she runs Maui Day Spa out of her home. She can come to your location, but it was more cost-effective for me and my wedding party to go to her. Here's her link.

Maui Day Spa - Spas on Maui, Salon Services on Maui, Massage on Maui

She has this amazing dog that just chilled in the corner of the salon while you get your hair done. She made sure I had pictures of my hair before, with and without veil. All my curls stayed, even through all the humidity, until I crashed out in the hotel at midnight.

Congratulations! Can't wait to see the pics when you get back.
