US Airways Baggage Policy

Recommended Posts

I know there are several threads that apply to this but they seem a little old and US Airways Baggage Policy and prices/ bag will change by July 1 so be sure to check out their website! Here is the email I received back when I asked them how to travel to Jamaica with my wedding dress:

Thank you for visiting usairways.com.

Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate the hanging of your

wedding dress.

It is best to take the garment bag that the dress came with, put it

inside of a standard luggage garment bag, fold the garment bag in half

and place it in the overhead bin. This causes the least amount of

wrinkling especially through the bodice and the bottom where steaming is

usually most needed. Any minor wrinkles that folding may cause will

usually "press themselves out" if you hang it up as soon as you reach

your destination. The maximum size of a garment bag that will fit in the

overhead bin is 45 inches. I would suggest transporting your dress this

way.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to reply

or call our Internet Support Desk at (800) 327-7810. We know that you

have many choices and we thank you for choosing US Airways.

Sincerely,

Paula Miller

Thanks Amber!

We're flying US Airways in August. I was also told that you can prepay for check in luggage. Its $15 per bag now if you pre pay on the airline site or $20 after

July 9th and $25 at the airport.

Some girls have said to also do this and that it really depends on the flight attendants if they would hang your garment bag up for you. When we went to the Dominican Republic, they accomidated the in flight brides. Guess it probably depends on their moods. huh

I'll have to purchase a garment bag of that size. The only one i have is the one from David's Bridal with the dress.

To be honest, I think every airline is programmed to give you the same response: "we do not have a closet to accomodate your dress; you will have to place it in the overhead bin." We flew United & were told the same thing, however, once aboard the plane the flight attendants quickly took the dress & the suit bag & hung it in the first class closet. I think it's all up to the flight attendants & 9 times out of 10, you will get a helpful attendant that is more than willing to help out a bride with her dress. Good luck!!!

I agree with kstinson. We flew US Air and I was totally prepared to put my dress overhead, but the flight attendant was so exicted to have a bride on the plane, it seemed, that she practially ripped my dress and DH's suit out of our hands and then put them right in the closet.

Also, not sure if this is normal, but we did not have to pay to check any luggage on the way home from JA. Not sure if its just going and not coming, or if they were just behind.

Its nice to see flight attendants being so awesome to brides. It seems from reading posts and articles on destination weddings, tell everyone your getting married or on your honeymoon and see what deals or upgrades you can get.

Regarding checking the dress...I would never check the dress...there are so many stories of garment bags coming without the wedding dress in them. It seems US Airways is trying to make it so you can bring it on the plane vice checking it. When we fly to Italy next year, that dress is coming on board with me.

Be careful with the dress bag the bridal shops give you. They're usually pretty cheap. My dress was my carry on (I agree with Robin...Do NOT check your dress, carry it on with you) and it slipped off the hanger while I was walking through the airport with it before boarding the plane. When I plopped it done on a seat to fix it, I pulled on the zipper and it came off. This was 6 days before my wedding, 4 days before I would be at the villa where I would be getting dressed. I couldn't open that bag until I got to the villa because I would risk getting it dirty during transport. So basically, my dress sat in a clump at the bottom of that bag for 4 days.

Here are my points:

1. You may want to invest in a higher quality bag.

2. My dress didn't need to be steamed or anything. That Caribbean humidity took care of those wrinkles in no time at all.
