Carnivale Week - St. Thomas

Has anyone been there during Carnivale? I was planning my wedding for the last week of April 2010, but I just found that is during Carnivale. I've heard mixed reactions from people -some say room rates are higher and car rentals are impossible and the island is really busy, where others say it's basically a local celebration so it's not that much busier and mainly contained to downtown. I'm just trying to figure out whether to move my date. Grrr.

 

Any advice would be great! Thanks!

This is my understanding of Carnival too. I know that hotels do raise rates for Carnival.

 

I remember reading that the court is closed during Carnival, meaning it'd be difficult to do your license stuff.

I would avoid having a wedding on St. Thomas during Carnival...my in-laws live on St. Thomas and they always say how crazy it gets during that time! I think you'll also run into higher hotel fees and possibly flights?

 

Even though Carnival may only be concentrated to downtown areas, that means your guests won't really be able to explore those shopping/dining areas very easily during their stay. Also, the route from the airport to almost all of the hotels is through downtown (headache!). I would be wary of possible delays that could result for your vendors or guests during Carnival...you'll have enough to stress about as it is!
