Anyone heard of/using SKY LANTERNS?

I really think they are pretty but tbh, they scare me.

 

- traveling on a plane -- I wouldn't want to be on a plane carrying a bunch of "fuel cells" from lanterns made in china.

 

- lighting them - if someone got hurt @ my wedding I would feel awful. plus everyone will have a cocktail in hand and alcohol and this stuff just doesn't mix

 

- danger - what if one lands on one of the thatched roofs as someone suggested earlier?

 

There are a myriad of warnings for these:

 

# Do not launch in wind conditions that make lighting the lantern difficult. In any case ensure that the wind is not stronger than 5 mph

# Unpack the lanterns away from the source of ignition. Never light lanterns whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Never smoke whilst handling the lanterns.

# Before the lantern is launched, the naked flame must be supervised at all times.

# Launching a lantern in strong winds, that is torn or has burn holes in may cause premature landing and fire at the point of grounding.

# Check the wind direction prior to releasing the lanterns – obstacles such as buildings and trees should not be in the direct flight path of the lantern and must be at least 30 metres away.

# Do not release lanterns within a five mile radius of an operational airport or landing strip or within two miles of a major road or motorway.

# Do not release the lanterns in an area where the glow could be confused as a distress signal.

 

I'm not trying to be negative nancy.. if you're having these, hopefully all will go well and I'm sure they will be really beautiful.... they're just not for me.

You cannot take fuel cells on any plane departing from US or Canada.

Thank you for this post. I think this idea is so cute and I was debating it, but this helped me make my decision not to have these lanterns. I just don't need the extra headache. There's too much other stuff to worry about!
