bcbride,

Most of the sites I found mentioned that they sold the bio-degradable lanterns and I'm thinking that there is no way for them to have any type of fuel involved. But I do remember when I googled them, I found a youtube video of some people who made homemade lantern that did actually have some type of fuel/gasoline. Here is a close-up pic of one of the bio-degradable lanterns and although I'm not exactly sure what the wick is made of, at least it isn't some sort of liquid.

Things to bear in mind

Ensure that the wind is not stronger than 5 mph.
Do not release within five miles of an airport.
Ensure that trees are not in the flight path.
Use care around dry crops.
Always keep water or fire extinguishers nearby
Children must not be left unattended with the Wish Lanterns.
The trees may be a problem for me. Does anyone know how long they stay in flight?

Hey! The lanterns are great. I'm using them for my wedding. I checked with the airlines and you can take them on the plane as they do not have liquid in them. You have to take them in your hold, not hand luggage. This info is from the website Im getting mine:

(I do not agree that they are safe for children)

WISH LANTERNS are fully biodegradable, non-flammable and safe and easy to use, and create an amazing visual effect that adds enjoyment and wonder to any special occasion.

All you have to do is light the fuel cell and gaze as the Wish Lantern floats up to the skies. Using the power of fire, the WISH LANTERN will be in the air for about 12 minutes and go up over a mile in the air.

WISH LANTERNS stand 108cm tall and 66cm wide at its widest point. After release and flight, the Wish Lantern will self-extinguish and float gently to the ground.

You can get smaller ones.
