What are you and FI/DH doing about your finances?

Recommended Posts

We each have our own savings and cking accts. We also have a joint checking account that we pay our bills out of. And although we have separate accts I still know what he has b/c I am constantly moving money around to earn more interest. FI seems to think its not fair but I tell him it is b/c he can say he has a financial advisor for free!!!LOL

We are keeping our finances separate too. We do have a joint account that we both contribute the same amount into each month to take care of household bills, mortgage, etc. But otherwise our money is our money and this way we dont have to get into a discussion about what we want to buy. If we want it we get it.

My previous marriage we put our money together and that worked too, however I do remember it being a little difficult bc we always had to advise eachother first on what we wanted to purchase. It wasnt always the best thing - I think that is why one of the number one reasons for divorce is finances....lol oh well....to each his own right?

Do what works best for you, bc what works best for me may not be in your best interest right??

Good luck

Right now we have separate checking accounts and I have a separate savings account. We also have a joint savings that we do not spend money out of. It is strickly savings. We also have a joint credit card. We have discussed it and when we get married (maybe sooner) we want to open a joint checking for bills (so they can all be paid out of one) We also want to keep our separate checking accounts. I think he wastes a lot of money and I would probably have a heart attack if I knew every penny. Don't get me wrong...I waste money sometimes too.

We both have our own chequing accounts, I have the savings account, I do all the investing and all the saving. FI pays all the bills and all the expenses, I pay for my clothes and my crafts unless he is around. The rest of my cheques go into either the savings account or my chequing account. We have agreed on a specific amount of money to go into the savings account each month and I make sure that happens.

We have discussed this and after we get married this will not change. We like have different banks. We just bought a house and it was great having two banks because they played against each other to give us the best interest rate.

We haven't done this yet but we plan to open a joint checking and savings account and then keeping our own checking account. We're going to use our joint account for all of our expenses. We'll put a certain percentage (TBD) in our separate checking accounts to spend on whatever our hearts desire :) That way we can spend it on whatever we want without having to explain it to the other. I think it'll work out great.

The day after our "legal" day we went to the bank and added his name onto my checking and savings accounts and switched his direct deposits over etc. Now everything is 100% joint. (I preferred my bank to his!)

I love it this way. It used to make me feel uncomfortable when he wouldn't let me pay for anything...now it's all "ours" - yay!
