Me, I'm getting married October 22, and won't be having an AHR. My fiance is Dominican and can't get to Canada until summer '10 so we'll have a "Celebration BBQ" then.
Oh My!!!! Your married and you look so amazing!!!! Congrats!!!!

we were thinking about doing a reception before the wedding as well--we are getting married 10/31/10 and don't want to have a party when we get back during the holidays. to the brides who are having their reception before their wedding i was wondering a few things:

1) how did you phrase the prewedding reception on your invitations? or stds?

2) i was also curious who you guys invited to the party? did you only invite people who were invited to the DW or other guests as well??

3) did you have an engagement party on top of the pre-wedding party??

thanks so much ladies!

Exactly the thread I needed to read tonight! I have been working on the AHR recently as with our wedding in November I think I need to get a venue booked back here asap to avoid the Christmas party craze. But as I got further into the planning and meeting with venues I started to realize that it was turning into exactly the type of wedding we were trying to avoid by going away! The big hall, the catered food, the receiving line, the head table... all things that neither of us really want. What we really want is a casual bbq at our farm with people welcome to bring their RVs and stay for breakfast the next morning. Obviously can't be done in November in Alberta sooo.... I am glad to read here that others have waited on the weather. Now I am thinking wedding in Nov, AHR in June or July - perfect!! AND I just spent the evening with my FMIL and had a good talk with her and discovered that she doesn't really feel the need to have a big "formal" reception - I was under the impression that it was important to her as she has a big family but not at all! Yay!! She thinks a bbq party next summer is a great idea... now for my mother!

This thread is great! It has helped me make my decision about an AHR. I actually think I will do a small Almost Married Send Off Party before and decide later whether I want to do something after the wedding. If I do choose to do something after the wedding, it will be at least 6 mos. later. Thanks for sharing!

I wish I had found this thread before we got married!!! I think having a "send off" party rather than an AHR is a great idea. However, not finding this thread before, leaves me to have our AHR sometime in the summer as a backyard BBQ... I have had comments that it's too far out from our wedding, but I don't want an official reception at a venue.. quite honestly, I don't even want to do the summer party now but I kinda have to ...
