IAMS pet food- animal testing!

Any brand of food that is sold in grocery stores is not quality food. Too many by-products and fillers.

 

If you want high quality food, go to your pet store (well, 95% will have high quality foods). Orijen, Innova, Evo, California Natural, etc. I actually have a list on all human grade, quality pet food with a review of their ingredients, etc. somewhere... and Science Diet isn't the greatest food either.

In our contact with our breeder we have to feed our Great Dane Royal Canin until he gets collected (sorry, TMI but he's a stud dog). Once that happens though we're going to get him fixed and FI has found some hollistic dog foods that are rated even better (although Royal Canin is also supposed to be pretty high quality) that we will gradually switch him to.

I'm not quite sure what they're called right now. I know that I'm wary of anything that you can find in a grocery store, especially after the whole horrific Menu Foods incident!

After hearing about the garbage they pack into most pet foods, and how it's cooked at such a high temperature that all of the nutrients are "killed" anyway, we decided to switch to a raw food diet. We use The Ultimate Diet and it's pretty easy...we just thaw out his food in a couple of tupperwares every 2 days or so. He LOVES it and you can definitely see the difference in his digestive system. It's obvious that most of the food gets absorbed into his body instead of passing out in his you-know-what. He used to go to the bathroom 2-3 times per day and now he goes once per day or every other day.

Wow, Heather that is great. The vet wanted Otis to gain weight, so he was on the Nutro High Energy. it is very high in fat and protien. Significantly more than puppy food. Now he is just on adult food.

 

Jaq- the Authority brand is just petsmarts generic brand, so I am not sure if it is good or not.

Iams and Nutro did a number on all my dogs. And both foods were receommended by our vet. All 3 of them were very, very sick. Diahrrea, vomot, lethargic, etc. After many expensive vet bills we switched them to a more natural dog food. We tried out California Natura and Evo, and they have never been better.

I also read how vets recommend certain foods because they get kickbacks from the company. A blogger that I follow..her dog was having issues and was eating IAMs, so her mom confided in a friend that is like a dog whisperer. He told her that: I would never feed my dog Iams because it is made with chicken by-products (of which there are no rules) and corn meal. Meat by-products are any parts of the chicken that is not consumed by people. This could include beaks, feathers, feet. Corn is not digestible for dogs or even humans. It's a filler and causes the dog to eat more and poop more. It's a waste of money. Vets even recommend Science Diet dog food because if they promote the food in vet offices, Science Diet will pay for part of their schooling. Science Diet is another dog food I would suggest my clients to avoid."

 

Of course this is just one persons opinion. But the more you research, the more you read that is all true.

It's disgusting how many foods are out there for our pets that are just filled with preservatives, fillers, and overall ickiness.

I did alot of research on this when I first got my Maltese, miss daisy.. and I never had a clue how many of the bigger well known brands were just CRAP.

In the end.. I chose Merrick for Daisy and she has done well with it. The only thing I don't like is that it can be hard to find as it's not sold at any of the chain pet stores. Another one I do really like though is Natural Balance (Daisy eats the small bites particularly) and that is sold at Petco.

Not sure if either of these brands make cat foods but for doggies I've had good experiences.

I got a new vet when I moved and she recommended switching my cats to high-quality canned food rather than kibble. There are a couple of different kinds that I give them, depending on what store I can get to. Natural Balance and Trader Joe's house brand are the main ones. Neither of them use by-products or lots of indigestible grains. My fatty cat has lost some weight and they are both doing great on canned.

Im going to have to really look into this and find something. Lately my lil kitty has been sick and maybe b/c I gave her the Science diet. I have a fat cat though, about the size of a mini horse (k not really) but they seem to like the canned better. I'll have to search. I'm glad I started this thread.

I worked for Nutro's marketing dept for two years and they do not do animal testing. Also, it's the best food out there.
