Does everyone do STD? I'm just wondering if I can just send out invites with all the resort info, or if I need to send STD now and then invites out closer to the actual wedding (getting married Jan 2010). Thanks!

I would say they are necessary for a destination wedding. People have to plan for taking the time off from work or school. Also, we had people that initially didn't think they would be able to come b/c of the cost. But we gave them about 10 months notice so I think it made easier to digest the cost b/c they could spread it out.

But if you're having a small DW with only close family and friends, you can probably get away without doing it.

If you're worried about cost, I know that a lot of girls on here used vistaprints.com to print their STDs. Very reasonable (sometimes even free except shipping).

Good luck!

I'm getting married in March 2010. I wanted to make sure I gave everyone plenty of notice and time to book hotel rooms since we are getting married in Jamaica. I sent out the invitations, r.s.v.p.'s, and an accommodation card which is very basic and instructs the guests to contact me for booking information for the resort and flights. I can show pictures if you would like. But, it's really up to you when you want to send everything out.

I would also say that they are necessary/expected. People need a heads up if it's a DW. If you send an invite now it may get lost and misplaced when it comes to booking time. This may cause guest to call you for info that you have already provided. This would put me at a stress level of 10000x.

Thanks for the responses so far. So if I send out STD say in May to everyone, with the booking info etc, when would send the 'invites'? And do you need to send them to people who've already booked? Anyone I am inviting already knows it is a dw and has for at least 6 months now. I'm so anxious for the prices to come out so I can finally get things firmed up. Waiting for quotes is the most frustrating part of this!

I don't think STD are ALWAYS necessary. Do the people you are inviting already know about the wedding and have started booking? If so, i would skip out on the STD. If there are still people who don't know then I would do STD. STD aren't really to give any booking info, etc. STD are just to let people know you are getting married and when, and for a DW I think maybe including location, but not all the info needed for booking. The invite is supposed to give those details. So it is up to you at this point. I would say this far out yes, but if you're guests already know and are already booking then don't waste the time or money on them.

I just have to add that FI is sitting next to me and saw the title "STD-are they necessary" He replied: "No, I would say they aren't necessary, they probably hurt." i laughed and told him STD is Save The Date

I think STD are necessary because need to reserve time to travel... but you don't have to make a formal one. I just sent an e-mail !!
