Ceremony Readings?

Recommended Posts

I want part of the traditional 1 Corinthians read. And I really like this one... I am a total English nerd, and I have this and a quotation from Romeo and Juliet for our programs. (it is in my signature).

What greater thing is there for two

human souls than to feel that they

are joined together to strengthen

each other in all labor, to

minister to each other in all

sorrow, to share with each

other in all gladness, to be

one with each other in the

silent unspoken memories?

George Eliot

I LOVE the Velveteen Rabbit too!

And I am seriously a HUGE Winnie the Pooh fan; in fact, as a suggestion for a reading from a young person, what about a short quotation from Winnie the Pooh?

I also heard one about, "How do you spell love? You don't spell it. You feel it."

Or:

What about collecting some examples of "Love is" as defined by kids, pick a couple of your favourites, and have her read them? I post them around my classroom at Valentines Day. Here are some sites with them:

http://www.religioustolerance.org/love_is.htm   Hope that helps.    I also like Variations on the Word Love by Margaret Atwood. It probably is not for all brides, and I do not know if we will use it...probably not. But here it is anyway. I really like it :) It is quite long. Maybe only part of it?

Variations on the Word Love

This is a word we use to plug
holes with. It's the right size for those warm
blanks in speech, for those red heart-
shaped vacancies on the page that look nothing
like real hearts. Add lace
and you can sell
it. We insert it also in the one empty
space on the printed form
that comes with no instructions. There are whole
magazines with not much in them
but the word love, you can
rub it all over your body and you
can cook with it too. How do we know
it isn't what goes on at the cool
debaucheries of slugs under damp
pieces of cardboard? As for the weed-
seedlings nosing their tough snouts up
among the lettuces, they shout it.
Love! Love! sing the soldiers, raising
their glittering knives in salute.

Then there's the two
of us. This word
is far too short for us, it has only
four letters, too sparse
to fill those deep bare
vacuums between the stars
that press on us with their deafness.
It's not love we don't wish
to fall into, but that fear.
this word is not enough but it will
have to do. It's a single
vowel in this metallic
silence, a mouth that says
O again and again in wonder
and pain, a breath, a finger
grip on a cliffside. You can
hold on or let go.

When two people join together

and bond their lives forever

because they are certain they have something special

that will make their commitment last…

this is the first act of faith. Upon this act of faith these two people will build a life.

and as long as their determination stays with them

this life will always be their hope, their dreams, their truth, their being, their inspiration,

and their source of strength.

Through their life together, they will hurt and laugh.

Together they will feel all of lifeâ€s up and downs.

They will learn and grow through trial and error.

The lessons will show them the meaning of true love

And the difference between a love that lasts

and one that just gives up.

These two people will face each failure together and

discover the strength to go on.

They will encourage each otherâ€s dreams and forgive each otherâ€s faults.

Through a labour of love.

these two will become as one,

fighting against the odds and ultimately creating

a commitment that will grow into an infinite love.

Loooooove this!!!!! I think this is the one we're going to use at our ceremony!!!! Thank you!!

I wanted to do the Hands ceremony element but did not get a say in the ceremony. Oh well. But it is lovely if you can do it.

Check out things you are into... poems, songs, quotations from movies. I like some of the ones here for something a little different:

We used Pablo Neruda's poem in some of our stuff, and a quotation from Romeo and Juliet, since I am an English teacher. We are also a little nerdy, so some nerdy movie quotations made their way into our guest book, though we could not use any of that in our ceremony.

Just keep searching - there are a lot of non-religious options.
