I advise you if you are going this route to no tell anyone, we considered and told our families they were very upset and requested we go the civil route with a judge which means about an extra $1000 to the wedding cost (translations $360 US + judge $620US).

We're planning on doing that this summer, my husband's work wouldn't look favorably on an international marriage certificate. So, we save the translation money, and the only people who will know are our two witnesses here in the states if we can get them in town for our civil ceremony. We're treating it like paperwork, our wedding day is still in DR.

Yikes. We didn't tell anyone either, but I know there has been a lot of discussion about this topic before. One bride caved and told her MOH and she told a bunch of guests (this is about a month before departure) and about 15 people cancelled because they weren't "spending good money for a lie".

So I would be very careful. We never told anyone, and noone was the wiser. When we went to city hall, we just said we were doing some preliminary paperwork. That was it. Not a total lie, but we felt better down there.

Hi Debs,

I probably won't be telling those sensitive guests, that need the real thing only :)

Does the resort require the Marriage Certificate from Canada to do the symbolic wedding? Or would the Record of Solemnization of Marriage be enough? Because to get the actual certificate we'd need to wait for registration first and then to apply for the certificate, which takes up to a few of months (at least in Canada, Ontario).

From what I read on the forum many couples go to the city hall the day before departure to DW and do the symbolic ceremony there...

Thanks!

I really hope that the record of Solemnization of Marriage is enough because we leave for DR on April 25th and we are currently going to City Hall on April 24th! I have heard of people getting legally married when they get back so hopefully it won't be a problem!

We didn't need anything to prove we were actually married. They just did the ceremony. The wording they used was really nice, so even if you didn't want to make it really legal back home, you didn't have to. It was like a promise ceremony, they way they worded it. It was really nice.

We are actually having a civil ceremony with a JP here in the states and have invited family and very close friends. Almost all of my extended family had let me know that they were not going to be able to make the trip. With a little push from my mom we caved in and agreed to a ceremony for the family to witness. It is going to be a nice event but I'm not wearing my wedding gown, we are not dancing, and it's early in the day (11:00). I think for us this was the best way to do it. In the DR we will have our acutal ceremony with gowns/flowers/wedding party/rehersal dinner/reception. We are considering this our "real wedding" This has kept everyone happy so far. Our friends/immediate are still super excited about the DR and those who can't go still feel a part of everything.

We are getting married legally about a month before we leave for DR. It saves us about $1000 on the minister/judge, translation services etc.. and saves us the headache.

Everyone that is attending knows that we are doing this.. we were very honest. We told everyone that we are just signing legal papers in the US. We explained what a troublesome process it was and assured everyone that we were just signing papers in the US. Our REAL wedding in our minds with be in DR; where we will exchange rings, vows and commit ourselves to eachother. Noone has given us a hard time about it or questioned it at all.
