Anyone else not changing names?

Recommended Posts

I am not changing my last name. I'm doing it for several reasons. One is business, I have so many degrees and certifications, and insurances... the list goes on, that I can never imagine having to tackle all that stuff. As well, I'm the last of my name, my family has all girls, so I feel its personally important to keep it. As well, on a selfish side I want to get my doctorate, and if I'm going to work that hard I want my name for the Dr. part.... lol

My FI didn't mind too much. I've always been independent. And kids will have his last name (I might try to sneak my last name as a middle name to pass it along - but thats still being debated). Some people have made their comments, but it our lives and our choice and think it should be up to each couple to decide.

I did not change my last name when I married. There were several contributing factors, but it was primarily bc I prefer my last name over his. I did tell him he was welcome to change his last name to mine...he was not amused, haha. He does smile when I'm referred to as Mrs HisLastName, but is slightly annoyed when he's called Mr MyLastName. ;-)

I didn't read through all of the comments thus I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this, but the laws regarding the legal last name of a married woman vary by state. For example, if married and domiciled in California, the woman's legal last name automatically becomes the man's legal last name. Whereas in Nevada, there needs to be a legal name change...hence the reason we wed in Tahoe, but on the Nevada side.

I wouldn't worry about the comments others make. It's not their business which last name you choose to use.

I'm not changing mine come hell or high water lol I was born with it i'm keeping it lol

I've been married before and even on my divorce certificate it had my maiden name lol made me laugh that the only way people would know i've been married is if they drove 200 miles and checked at a random registry office lol

FMIL won't be happy about me not changing my name but to be honest she can poke off nothing to do with her lol FI isn't bothered in the slightest mostly because even if he was I still wouldn't do it I'd just say ok we won't get married then lol

We always argue over the kid thing because he says we'll hyphen the kid's name lol I laugh and change it round so that my name is last lol and once i've registered it tough crap lmao

My line will go on lmfao

I did not change my name either. At first, it was for professional reasons (when I was in med school) but after dropping out of med school, it became a personal reason. DH never really cared too much about my not wanting to change my name and after the wedding, we talked about it and I told him that I dont mind the name change as long as he's willing to do ALL of the paperwork and running around that's involved. His response: please keep your last name! :) LOL Our son will absolutely have his last name and in the social circuit we go by a mix of our last names. Something that his GM said in his toast at our wedding and it sounded so cute that we're now using it!

I also got some grief from a few family members and still do. Mainly, brother and sister-in-law but I'm not the type to be polite about issues which are non of anyone's business! DH and I both would tell people that it's OUR business and we'll deal with it as we see fit whenever anyone would try to put in their 2 cents. DH has also been great about defending this decision of mine.

It's your name and no one has the right to take it from you! Unless you're willing to give it up :)

I'm changing mine- it's kind of sad but no one pronounces my name correctly EVER anyways- only Fi's last name is long and aweful (and it's not at all Italian-which sucks cause I'm 100%) so i'll be German for the rest of my life. LOL- i'm getting used to it though.

Well ... I have 3 kids and they've been upset whenever I say I'm changing my name ... in Texas I have three choices ... not change it, change it to his ... or put my current last name as my middle ... I guess 4 I could hyphenate ... I believe I'm going to put my current as my middle ... but I'm still deciding. I've talked more and more about it and my kids do understand ...

Their dad re-married so their step-mom's last is the same as theirs ... so at their schools it would make me feel ... strange I guess to not have their name ... but I'm their MOM and I know it and they know it so I guess that's all that matters. I'll get used to it ... *SmiLes* Suzanne

Like many of you I would like to keep my last name but I am still debating on changing it. I grew up in a divorced situation and my mom did not have the same last name as me. Everything was fine. So I feel I cannot use children as an excuse to ditch my last name. My last name is easy to spell, say, etc., plus the whole name change seems a little archaic in 2009. I think I will keep my original name but go by his socially. Many of my friends have done that due to professional reasons and that seems to be ok.

My fiance joked he would change his name to my last name because he likes that it is easy to spell and pronounce. We are still officially on the fence. I have a year

I kept mine for the same reason as a lot of you...too much trouble to change it and I like my last name...DH didn't mind at all that I was keeping my own name...I got more flack from my brother and sister in law than anyone else and I just said...my keeping my last name effects you how...lol...they piped down after that!
