I quit last year for 6 months and felt better than I have in the last 10 years, I actually said I was never going to be a "smoker" again. But of course thought is was ok to have a cig when I was out with friends and it just continued from there.
Great for you who are quitting right now, it is so hard, and I honestly feel like something is missing so it is a good idea to replace it with something else (a hobby/gym). I WILL try to quit again soon, it's all about setting the date. Good luck ladies:)

I totally empathize with you. I felt so much better when I quit for 3 months before. I can hardly work out without my lungs burning out of my chest. It sucks so bad. I wish I hadn't been such an idiot teenager trying to rebel!

I quit smoking in 2002. I smoked for 12 years... kinda sad that I started at 12 and quit at 24, but at least I quit. There's a few things I think that helped me out:

1. Zyban -- definately not for everyone, but it worked for me. Made me a bit nuts at the beginning and I had problems staying asleep

2. All of my close friends and I quit within 3 weeks of each other. Literally all of us smoked and heavily at that. Only 1 out of 10 or 11 went back to smoking. Misery loves company.

3. Stopped smoking in my car, 2 weeks before I actually quit. I think that was the hardest thing to do!! My car was my smoking lounge, since I didnt smoke in my house.

4. Water and lots of gum.

Good luck ladies! Not the easiest thing to accomplish, but holy shit did I ever have more money in the bank for shopping!!

Wow, I didn't get a chance to get on the forum all day today and I'm so happy with all of the replies (and relieved that I'm not the only one!). I'm glad to hear that some of you have been successful at quitting, it gives me hope!

So here's my smoking history: started at 17 because my boyfriend at the time was smoking (got rid of him but kept the habit, lol, why are we so stupid as teens?), both my parents smoke, FH smokes and FH's Dad smokes. I've tried to quit a few times but they mostly lasted less than 24 hrs. I quit for 5 days once on a hiking trip because we all decided not bring cigarettes with us (3 out of 4 people on the trip smoked), the second we made it out of the backcountry we high tailed it to the nearest convenience store.

So now it's ten years later and I must admit I mostly want to quit for superficial reasons. 1) I'm noticing a few fine lines and they terrify me, 2) bride in wedding dress holding cigarette=not cute!, 3) if I quit I can use the money I save to work on fixing #1 lol.

My main problem with quitting has always been the fear of weight gain and the fact that almost everyone I know smokes. It's really sad to say but I've met some of my closest friends in the "butt section". My friends are now slowly quitting, which should help, and I've signed up to run a 10K in May so I figure that training for that will help with weight gain and stress.

I'm on day 2 of quitting, I haven't broken down sobbing or murdered anyone yet so I figure that I'm doing ok, lol. The cravings suck sometimes but I'm trying to cope the best I can with Nicorette and water. I'm also trying to eat as healthy as I can (I have a major chip and diet coke weakness so I'm trying to avoid those things!).

FH has been amazing (even though he smokes he isn't doing it around me and he's quitting this weekend)! He keeps telling me how proud he is which helps! He even went out tonight and bought me a ton of healthy food (he knows my weight gain fears) and told me to go get a facial Friday to treat myself!

We can do it ladies! Keep the tips coming! muscle.gif

I haven't tried it, I thought about it though. The thing is that I'm studying adverse drug reactions for my PhD and that was suggested as one of the drugs that should look at (something about it being linked to psychotic episodes...whether that's from the drug or the smoking I don't know, ha ha) so it doesn't make me too anxious to try it! Then again, Zyban is linked to seizures and I've been on that before without any problems (besides it not helping my quitting).

My FH used Chantix the last time that we quit and he had a horrible reaction to it. He is normally a really upbeat, positive person, and Chantix gave him horrible dreams, made him really depressed, and tired all of the time. I have heard this from others so I am really apprehensive to go this route.

FYI about Chantix... make sure you DONT DRINK on it. This is a scary story, but if you are on Chantix, you really should hear this.

A guy I know, his roommate was on it, and one night he went out for a few drinks with his girlfriend even though it tells you not to drink. My friend says he only had 3 drinks which is far less than this guy usually has when he goes out. On the drive home he got into it with his girlfriend. When they got to their home he completely blacked out and a neighbor said they heard screaming. He flew off the handle and hit her, which was totally out of character for this guy. She than ran away, and he went to the nextdoor neighbors house because he was so disoriented and thought it was his trying to find her. The neighbor got so freaked out about this guy trying to break into his house, he shot him and killed him. His family and friends totally blames this incident on Chantix. I'm not saying that it doesn't work, or that it does. And I'm not trying to freak any one out, but just be careful!!!

So DONT DRINK ON THIS STUFF!!!

I just thought everyone should know.

CRAZY chantix!! I think I would rather just smoke.....my Dad is on Chantix, and he said he hasn't had any weird dreams or episodes....I asked him b/c I heard you can have really crazy dreams and he said he hasn't had any problems. I'm sure it just affects everyone different like everything else!!

Anyways It has officially been 1 week since I quit WOO HOO - I didn't participate in wine-o wednesday though b/c I don't know if I could resist that.....
