Why are you having a DW?

Recommended Posts

Even though my FI's family is pretty big, the family that I am close to is very limited. I didn't want the focus of my wedding to be trying to make rounds and having conversations with relatives like my great aunt Erma who I have only seen once in the last 10 years. I want my wedding to be about the union of two people who love each other and about sharing that with my closest friends and family on a vacation together. Plus, I think it is a great opportunity for all of us to get to know each other as a new family.

We are having a DW for a few reasons. Me and Kevin love to go places together we have never been. I have a HUGE loud, crazy mexican family and Kevin's mom side of the family is the same way. Besides we wanted private, intimate type of wedding with just the people we are closest to.

Ok far too much in common with us.. :-) Cain has a HUGE Mexican family and I have a large family but I also don't see the point of spending all day talking to people I haven't seen in 20 years. Cain and I love the ocean, and we always knew we wanted to be married on the beach somewhere, well Cabo fit the bill. Yes it's a little sad that more people aren't going to be able to make it to cabo but to be honest I would still do it if it was just Cain and I.

Seems like there is a common theme...

My 2 sisters have gone through weddings already. On both of them, for some reason, my family has reared their ugly green monster heads. Both of the weddings were traditional in most senses, and my parents invited so many people since they felt entitled to, that my sisters had to cut out close friends. Between my FI and I, our list would have been huge, mostly out of obligaion. Add my family and their friends and the list from my FI's family was about 300+ people. We would have had a HUGE, impersonal and stressful wedding to plan. Not only that, I'd be so worried about cutting costs that I was sure we'd spend so much $ just from the amt of people going, yet not having anything I want at the wedding.

On top of that, I LOVE to travel. I seriously view my job as a means to an end.... which for me, is to see the world. I have finally converted my FI into a traveller, so to me, a destination wedding made sense. All my friends saw it as such a no brainer since I'm always planning trips for all of us!

We choose cabo b/c we love the beach and the sun...I don't think either of us could picture our wedding any place other than a beach!~ It is very "Us". We love to travel and we definetly know how to soak up some sun. We decided on Cabo just a few days after we got engaged, (although I haven't even been there yet, most of my family has and loved it)! Also, I would rather have a smaller intimate wedding; rather than having to spend the day with great Aunt's whom I have never met. Plus, we just see it as an excuse for everyone to go on vaca.

Jeff & I chose a destination wedding for many of the same reasons as some who have already posted. For one, we have too many "acquintances" who would have to be invited- Jeff's mom is in politics and would have a ridiculous invited list if it was local. We also have a lot of coworkers that would expect invites. We decided we would rather spend a lot of money on a few people rather than a little money on many. My parents don't have alot of $$, so we are paying for them to go to Cabo. They have never been out of the coutry before, so I am so excited for them. It is so much more meaningful to us to have the ones nearest and dearest rather than 200 people we barely know.

We picked Cabo because we love Mexico and wanted to go somewhere new, we wanted somewhere on the ocean, and during my search I found Juan Carlos Tapia's site with his incredible pictures (which sold me on Cabo) and led me to this forum. Once I saw how many different resources were available to help me plan this Cabo wedding, it became an easy decision!

We knew we were not going to have the wedding at home when my father passed away last April. I just didn't want to deal with the traditional walking down the aisle or father and daughter dance etc. I want to be excited about my wedding not sad that I am missing out on certain parts of it. Another big factor is $money$, we are trying to purchase a home in the next few months and after all the newlyweds I have talked to, they all say that there wedding day just flys by. These are couples that spent, on average I would say 35,000.00 on their wedding. Call me crazy but I don't have that kind of money to spend on one day. I'd be much happier spending 15-20k on 10 days of wedding/vaca with my friends/ honeymoon in CABO!
