What about Zihuatanejo or Puerta Vallarta (Las Caletas) that are located close to Mexico City??

I found a few articles Zihuatanejo - Cruise Log - USATODAY.com

Is anyone concerned about these areas for weddings? I'm considering both of these areas, but I really need reassurance that's it's safe. Am I the only one worried about these areas? I haven't seen anyone mention them on here. Can anyone offers any words of wisdom?

The only concern that has really been on my mind is the blood test we have to take before we can get married. Do you go to a hospital, or is it done at the hotel? Is it clean? I may be paranoid, but I worry that it's not as safe as here in Canada.

I think the main point of the travel alert is that it specifies possible violence in the border towns, which excludes tourist cities like Puerto Vallarta and Ziho. I think Las Caletas is probably even more of a non-issue because it's a boat ride away, so not even a chance of violoence. There are plenty of LC brides on here who either had or are having their weddings soon -- def. look up those reviews or talk to one of them for their thoughts.

As for Ziho, we don't have many brides getting married there from what I recall, but I do know one -- Nikki and her hubby Dean just had a wonderful celebration there and she made no mention at all of potential safety issues. Again, if you check the Ziho section you should be able to find her and can ask her about it.

Interesting L.A. Times article about the violence in Mexico, according to this piece, if you're worried about traveling to Mexico, you should really be more worried going to tourist spots in the U.S.

 

 

Report: Mexico's tourist zones much safer than many in U.S.

Now Mexico's real estate industry is fighting back. A day before President Barack Obama visits Mexico to discuss, among other things, the troublesome drug war issue, RE/MAX Investment Properties issued the results of its research claiming that tourist zones in Mexico are up to 26 times safer than many tourist zones in the United States.

 

Among its findings: The state of Baja California Sur, which includes some of my favorite destinations such as Cabo San Lucas, La Paz and Loreto, has a homicide rate 26 times lower than Orlando, 18 times lower than Miami, 17 times lower than West Palm Beach and 12 times lower than Tampa and Honolulu.

 

(Note to self: Stay away from Florida!)

 

Almost ditto for Quintana Roo, which includes Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

 

The report used some of the same sources Outposts has used, including a daily tally of drug cartel-related homicides kept by Excelsior newspaper, which through Tuesday listed only one homicide in 2009 in Baja California Sur (compared with 115 in the northern state of Baja California, which includes Tijuana), and four in Quintana Roo.

 

The report also states that BCS has a homicide rate 39 times lower than Washington D.C., 19 times lower than Houston and 17 times lower than Dallas. There's lots more but the point is as clear as a glass full of blanco tequila, which may or may not be offered to Obama.

my friend who is in the airforce just got an email a few weeks telling him that none of the US Military could travel to any part of Mexico - does anyone know if this will change anytime soon? I'm bummed because I was excited for him and his wife to be there.

Jess, I know that the Navy has some specific rules in place that doesn't prohibit travel to Mexico but there is an advisory. Essentially, any navy man that goes to Mexico on leave has to fill out some specific request forms and follow some steps (i.e. having certain phone numbers on them at all times, having a 'buddy' listed on their request, etc.)

I found this link regarding the Air Force but I don't know much about it personally: Laughlin Air Force Base - Mexico Travel
It appears that travel to certain cities are prohibited but not all of Mexico.

My cousin is a bridesmaid & also in the military & so is her husband. She is not active, but in the reserves & there are not any restrictions on her going to Mexico, but her husband is in the active military (I forget which branch, does that make me a bad cousin:) & he is prohibited from going. I'm not sure if all areas of the military have the same rules & regs. Hope that helps!! I hope your friend & hubby can go

I'm so glad I found this thread. My Aunt's boyfriend is concerned about the violence and crime in Mexico right now and is actually considering canceling his trip to our wedding . Crazy.. I will have to send her this link.
