I understand being worried but I don't think you have to be too afraid to have a Cancun wedding. As everyone said, just use common sense. There are crazy drug wars in the U.S. too. If you are in a major city (NY, L.A., Chicago, Houston, etc.) you don't have to drive too many miles to be in an area where people are being murdered as a result of drug activity, sometimes daily. It doesn't mean tourists from other countries should be afraid to visit the United States, you know?

Along the lines of what Yari said if you are that worried maybe you shouldn't have a DW outside of the U.S. If your guests take on your fears you won't have too many willing travellers. Plus, scared is something you don't want to be at your wedding. There are tons of DW brides here who haven't had incidents like what you are afraid of, but you have to do what makes you comfortable.

I have been saying all the same things. But now I am getting more concerned. I have people not booking- afraid to take their children. One bride posted on here that she just got back and things are def diff there. Shooting in Cancun, at a stop she was at twice that day....Armed guards in Playa../on beach...As if things weren't stressful enough

Thanks for understanding Gail. It has nothing to do with "maybe a DW isn't right for you!" It is just the concern that this is your wedding day that you pay thousands for and there is concern about the place you will be attending. I will not be going outside of the resort but still have concerns.

I just read our first email.. stating that we need to change our wedding location. Has anyone heard on CNN were they are urging the US not to travel for Spring break? I havent heard or seen any news clips.. I know that you need to use common sense when traveling outside the US.. (the only thing I turn up is from 2005). Our wedding isnt until 2010.. things shoudl be cleared up right? is anyone looking at back-up plans?

I am just in limbo right now as to what to do..

Can I just point out that Cancun (where I'm headed) is over 2000 miles away from Tijuana. All 'alerts' and warnings and what not are regarding the BORDER towns. I definitely don't want to sound mean but I agree with starchild, if anyone is that worried, don't go.

I agree drTracy, it isn't about being mean or trying to make people feel silly for worrying, but seriously no amount of us saying "don't worry about it" can ease your fears if you are that concerned. I think we tend to think of these tropical places as paradise but they are countries with problems like everywhere else, they just have awesome beaches and attractions. Bad stuff happens and it will continue to happen all over the world, same with the good. We aren't government experts or clairvoyants who can assure your safety, mainly just brides who have been there and back and would do it again.

There are plenty of wedding stressors; location and fearing for your life and those of your guests don't have to be among them. Go where you feel that safety won't be an issue. You can have a DW anywhere, so maybe a it IS for you but not in a place that scares you to this extent.

Btw ever since I've been going to Mexico (15+ years) there have been federales walking and driving around armed with semi-automatic shotguns. I'd rather have them there than not there if something does go down.

Dayla darling, if the drug lords "take over Mexico"-- which would NEVER happen from a politicla perspective soley due to commraderie and trade agreements with the US and Canada-- we have bigger things to worry about than our weddings...

It's not going to happen. And if you are worrying yourself with unlikely scenarios like this, you are going to be a very stressed out DB for the next 6 months.

SO I didnt realize that the alert was just for the border areas just as Tijuana, etc. But I dont think that anything is wrong for those of us who have/had a some concern.

I do agree that the location should be somewhere were we feel safe,etc.. like I mentioned... I didn't realize that the alert was for the border areas.. sorry ladies.. shoudl have read it more carefully..
