Anyone doing an "alternative registry"

Recommended Posts

Thanks for all the input ladies!

FI and I have lived together for three years, and are definitely well set in terms of house-wares, furniture, etc. My dad is actually a real estate agent, and my sister -- a WC-- was the one that suggested the mortgage registry.

There is not website for it per sae, but every city / region will have an investment firm or mortgage broker that can refer you over to the appopriate avenues.

I'm still juggling with it. I think we might end up just going with the traditional registry... which bums me out. But YAY we get a Crate and Barrel this summer! Thank you USA for sending us your amazing stores! lol

Maybe one compromise instead of a registry would be to let your wedding party and close family that what you really need is cash for the house. So if someone asks what you could use for the wedding, they can just politely say, "Well, they are hoping to buy a house next year, so I think what they really need is a little help toward the down payment" or something similar. Like registry information, the best way to handle this, IMO, is through word-of-mouth.

At the end of the day, a mortgage registry (and perhaps even a honeymoon or giftcard registry) is just a thinly-veiled way to ask for money in lieu of gifts, and you will always run the risk of someone thinking that such a thing is tacky or offensive. It depends on your personal situation, but IMO, there is no polite way to ask for money.

I never heard of a mortgage registry but sounds like a good idea. What my fiance and I did was register at kohls, target and teh last place was our scuba shop. We are in the same boat have lived together for 3 years and have everything. We got certified to dive last year before we went to Jamaica and loved it, so we figured why not get the gear for something we love so much. I think we would use scuba gear a lot more than a toaster.
