Is it bad etiquette to not plan wedding far in advance?

Recommended Posts

I don't think it's rude at all. I told my guests last year. They had since March of 08, and my wedding isn't until October of 09, and I STILL only have 6 rooms booked. I almost feel like telling people closer to the date gets them more excited because they have something in the near future to look forward to. I am at the point that I am nagging people to get them to make their deposits. At least you won't have to do that! Plus, booking closer to the date usually saves you a ton of money. The hotel and airfare goes WAAAAAAAY down when you book so close to the date that you are leaving.

I completely agree with Erin... You may not have the guest turnout that you may otherwise have had if you had given a lot of notice.

Having said that, be prepared... you may have some backlash from friends and family regarding the no-notice.... and you'll get a lot of the "I would have went had I been given time to save"... etc....

Happy Planning.

Like you, the FH and I did not want to wait a whole year to get married (when you *know* you're with the right one, why wait, eh?), along with all the elaborate planning, etc. this is largely the reason why we chose to marry in Vegas - everything can be done quickly and easily there, yet still be nice and FUN for everyone. Additionally, Vegas is a destination that was easy for everyone to get to, doesn't take a lot of planning to book, and I won't have to worry about anyone not having a good time.

We got engaged last Xmas, and will marry in May. I haven't had any problems or complaints yet.

However, had I wanted to marry in a more exotic location (Bali was one of the choices), I probably would have just planned on having it just be the FH and me. 6 months would definitely not have been enough time to organize a wedding with guests/reception, etc., especially since a lot of the FH's family has never traveled overseas before. So IMHO, a lot of it kind of depends on who you want to have at your DW, and how easy it is for them to get there. If you expect people to get passports/visas, and fly 23 hours to attend your wedding, it would be both practical as well as polite to give them a more than a month or two to plan.
