Post all "Knock Off Wedding Dress" questions/comments here

Recommended Posts

This thread has been by far the most interesting on so many different levels.  I feel like I have to check it twice a day.  Any way I must say thank you ladies for posting all the information on the different makers, stores, styles, basically everything.  I finally took the plunge and ordered a very cheap ivory chiffon wedding dress, from instyleweddings.com  I just ordered a standard size.  The dress came out beautiful and it did need to be altered since I lost weight and did the standard size.  My fabulous seamstress made the changes i needed for $35 dollars. I was so amazed it was so cheap and fast!  So thanks to you ladies I bought a knock off dress for my TTD that cost me $110 total ( including rush shipping and alterations!!!) I wouldn't have gone this route without all of you so THANK YOU, THANK YOU ...My TTd looked very similar to my wedding gown and my mom was mad we paid so much for the wedding gown when the knock off looked just as good. Silly me didn't even think to take pics at my final fitting today but i will eventually post it for you ladies. Thanks!smile03.gif

Imara and M00sie,

Monica Bridal does make dress in silk, at $400+ range.  Silk is expensive, because it is a natural protein material that takes a lot of work to harvest.  To give u an idea, silk is made with moth's coccoons.  In China, moth worms only eat a certain type of plants ( I am not sure if Chinese moth babies have a different diet than others), so they make them grow until they turn into coccoons and then put the coccoons into boiling hot water to extract the silk (errr..I guess the worm/moth is cook).  Imagine the size of a chinese moth, and how many coccoons it is required to make a satin dress.

Less,

Congratz! Like I said before, buying a dress at a local bridal shop gives the bride some quality assurances and peace of mind, so don't feel bad/upset. Please share the pics with us.

Ok, first of all, this thread is not Kijiji, as I mentioned before there is a thread on this forum for brides to sell their stuffs.  We are smart brides, we know where to look on the forum in case we want to buy a second hand dress.

Second, there is smth call..DUE DILIGENCE.  Like before u buy a house, you would check it inside out.  Before you go into a restaurant, you would check the menu.  and..as a shoe seller, I think u would understand..before you buy a pair of shoes, u would try them on or at least check them out.  Therefore before u put a comment, u should read a bit on the thread.  This is a thread for budget conscious brides, dresses are below $400 in general.

Third, trust me, I look at myself constantly, and I would never walk out of my house with my face 3 tones paler than my neck with a shiny forehead.

Forth, another advice...if u are thinking of getting a $10K dress, planning to lower the cost to 3K by resell it at $7K after, JUST buy a $3K dress.

If u can find a close relative ...willing to be the sacrifice and buy the dress for u, ..then too bad to be ur relative and good for u and resell it at $7K and keep the money.

Fifth, no wonder our central bank is putting all sort of rules to prevent people to refinance and to become over leveraged!  Better think about my short book tonight...hmm...

I got my dress from monica bridal today, i am impressed and a little dissapointed. First it is very pretty! Quality seems good, the beading is beautiful!, However I told her there were beads spread throughout the skirt that you can't see in the pictures and she assured me they knew about them, This could have been a misunderstanding though so now the skirt is plain tulle, as well as the tulle covering the bodice. Only the shoulders waist and middle bodice have beading. Its still very pretty though.

Second, It doesnt look so good on me,, i'm a little top heavy and i'm busting out of this,, the boning can't take it. :(  This is not Monica Bridal's fault though, I knew it was a possibility when I ordered it, but for 150 bucks it was worth the risk to me. Perhaps someone else can use it...I will take pics soon...

Also, I just ordered a dress from Monica bridal, i'm hoping since its very simple it will be quite similar.  I think I might use this as a TTD but not sure...

Which might be a time thing but sounds more like they just think the dress is too complicated and don't want to make it anymore. It is disappointing since I already told them that it is fine that the pleats are different, fine that the flowers are different, fine that the lace is different. I just want is the top to have a waistband, all be pleated, and not to go down as far. They are obviously capable of pleating well, can probably add a waistband without trouble (well it seems simple to me, a complete non-sewer ) and I gave them the exact measurements for how long the bodice should go down. I didn't think I was being suuuuper picky and difficult, but I maybe I am. Well, if they say that they can't do it, I should just trust that they can't since they know their abilities best, but who can I ask to make it now?

Jeff Lui wants $216 for it, which is fine, but can't show me any photos of his lace or appliques. Topspartner will take too long now, probably even if I do rush service with the holiday coming up.

Looks like they did a really good job. If you still like the dress you can try taping yourself (breast) down. My cousin is top heavy and it worked for her. As far as the beading a good seamstress should be able to add subtle beading to the skirt for you. If not, it is really pretty I am sure someone would buy it from you.
