How did you pay for your wedding?

Recommended Posts

I have a spreadsheet set up of our budget, cause I buy alot as we go and w/ the spreadsheet i keep on track of what still needs to be paid. My future in-laws are paying for our hotel and flight. We've bought most of the smaller details, we just buy as we go. We get paid every week. We've taken everythin that we owe and divided by the number of weeks we have until its due and put that amount into the file every week. Once we've reached the amount we need to we've been just giving it to FFIL and he will cover everything. Alot of stuff is due the day of the wedding and we don't want to think about it, so he is taking care of it.

One thing to keep in mind if you making payments by credit card is a lot of them charge a 3% fee for international charges.. I called all of our credit cards and the only ones that don't are Discover (although this may be changing soon according to my FI) and Capitol One mastercard... It's not that high of a percentage, but 3% of wedding costs will add up fast..

MY FI and and I are paying for it all. He and I work a little differently. He doesn't want to know the total all in (Thank God!)

I have been paying as I go $2-5k per month as things come up. I am done at this point and my half is paid. He is paying for the reception food/drink & welcome party/reheresal dinner food/drink. This is all on one bill. He wanted to pay a lump sum at the end.

I have paid for all decorations, clothing, rings, vendors, etc as I book them. This way we were both happy.

I pay for things as they come. I had to use two of my revolver credit lines, but I should get my bonus next month and this will allow me to settle the revolvers and pay for the final bills, all due in May.

Honeymoon was fully paid in advance in order to get the 30% discount they offered.

My fiance and I would love to get married sooner but we are a paycheck to paycheck family.. so we are waiting until after next years tax returns. We saved what we could after bills from this years returns and we opened a Money Market account for the wedding with it. Our plan is to dump money in monthly even if its $20 here and there. Then cross our figures we get a stimulus check this year! The rest will come from next years tax returns... God willing I hope we have enough...

oh and we do not have anyone (i.e. parents) helping to pay for any of our wedding.

My FI and I have a budget in mind and we will do everything possible not to go over it! As mentioned in another thread, the joys of a DW is that once you pay the deposit on our location you have a few months to pay it off. In our case we have 11 months to pay of the remaining balance. We also put down a larger balance in the beginning! We are travelling with two kids and that makes it a little more expensive, but well worth it. When it comes to all the added extras we are going to try really hard to avoid overspending. We are bringing our own photographer (his mother) and we will have CDs made with our favourite music and well as our first dance. We dont mind if we have to play it in a courtyard under the stars, or just wait till we get home.... So long as we come back married that's all that really matters.

I think the most important thing to do is to figure out a budget that works for you guys and stick to it no matter what!!

Good luck and happy planning.

We are doing like some posters are.. paying for things as they come up. We also have a seperate account set aside for the wedding and our trip to JA. Since we have about 16 months until the actual day, we figure putting aside a certain $ amount, plus the tax returns from this year and next year we should be fine with out touching our credit cards.

For those who have family helping cover some of the expenses.. I think that is awesome..
