I want to make funky shaped placemats... is this possible?

Hey Ladies,

 

I've never used a sewing machine... but I really really want to make funky shaped placemats. Is this going to be impossible to do or... just slightly complicated?

 

My inspiration for this DIY project comes from a place setting I found here:

Ideally, what I'll do is make two "placemats" out of two different colored fabric to simulate the bottom two layers of the setting. I also thought that maybe I could use gold charger plates to add a little dimension.

 

Any ideas? Is it possible or do I need to be more creative?

If you can learn the basics of sewing, then I think this will be no problem for you. Once you learn; it's very easy. Do you have patterns you want to follow? Do you want to use something in the middle of the fabric to make it stiff? There are a lot of things you may want to concider when you decide waht to do. How many placemats do you intend on making? I think if it's a lot I think you might be in over your head....but then again I didn't look at when your wedding date is, so you may have time. Let me know if you need any help!
