It's tough for me to know... I had lap-band surgery last August, so I'm on my way down, I just don't know what its going to look like when I get there. :) I'm planning on being a size 12/14 by September but people keep asking me what type of dress I am going to get... its... kinda... well... yeah. :) I read the "suggestions" and they say that mermaid dresses are for tall super skinny size 2 girls... but then I look at the dresses and think "it doesn't have to be that way... I bet normal girls can wear them too.

Here's the dress I am looking at:
Moonlight Valerie Couture Wedding Dresses - Style H9906 [H9906] - $990.00 : Wedding Dresses, Prom Dresses, and Designer Wedding Dresses
It's a mermaid dress, but does have an overlay, so I think it is a bit more forgiving than other mermaid dresses. :)
I have to agree with Bianca here - even though the gown is listed as a 'mermaid' style, the overlay makes it look much closer to an A-line, which I think could look fabulous on any body type. And - I also agree with BillysBride in that I think that women with curves should flaunt them - make it work for you instead of thinking that only straight-up-and-down girls can wear certain shapes. I did get stuck in that mantra myself for a bit, until I tried a more form-fitting gown, and realized that I actually LIKE how my butt looks in it! In the end, if you are comfortable in it and feel like the most gorgeous bride ever, make that dress your own. Good luck!

I don't know what street size I am, but if it can help, when I tried these on I was 38.5 / 31 / 43.5. I'm 5"4

All the dresses you see are size 12. In general too tight, except the David's one... but that gives an idea.

First the one I ended up getting (one size bigger) :

Then the one with which I really had a hard time deciding... it took a lot of videos and friends to help me :

I do not have any photos to help out but just thought I'd see what your thread is about and I think seeing photos of real girls in dresses is such a good idea. It really helps!

I also have to say that the dress you love is absolutely gorgeous. I am in love with it! Too bad I already bought mine. I found I tried on several different styles to see what looked best. It doesn't matter how much you like the photo, when it is on you you might not like it so much!

Happy dress hunting!

It's jasmine couture H099

Not sure they still sell it ? I ended up not taking this one because I felt too covered on the chest, however it's true that the corset has the best shape of them all.

You sure are getting some amazing pics of gals with gorgeous curves completely rockin' a mermaid style dress.

From everything I have read and seen, I think that the Mermaid style looks better on ladies with curves. If you are a size 2 and 7ft tall; then you have nothing to fill it out with IMHO.

My personal experience with them was NOT good. I am a street size 4, 5'4 but carry all my weight in by bottom half. Every mermaid I tried on.. made my hips look HUGE and my top half look tiny in comparison. Not flattering on me at all.. I think its all about the way that your body is proportioned. I ended up with a very close fitting modified a-line with more of an empire cut; which worked out perfectly in balancing out my body.

I say.. go with what makes you feel sexy! Get out there and try some dresses on!
