Monetary amounts for people's wedding gifts

Recommended Posts

don't worry amy - if i spend $100 on a wedding gift, that's good. that's about my average. but just out of college when all my friends were getting married (and when I got married!) it was usually about $50-70.

Crap, I want to send you guys all invites to our wedding!!!

I was wondering about this myself, but I'm shocked and my jaw is dropping on how much people spend on wedding gifts (or money)! Honestly, most of my friends either did a 'permanent live-in' situation or they were married right out of high school. I've had one friend who got married since high school and for her, I did her wedding photos as a gift and then presented her with a really nice shot in a display case with her invitation and I caligraphied their wedding vows to each other on parchment paper to display in the case too.

Damn, I've gotten off cheap, apparently!

Very interesting, my FI and I are talking about having a money registry along with a couple of small traditional registries and frankly I don't expect any of our friends to give us more than $50.

I have personally never given cash as a wedding gift, but when buying presents it really mostly depends on my financial situation and the relationship to the bride and/or groom. I think I probably avg. between $20-60 for wedding presents. I am cheap I guess, but sometimes that's the way it has to be.

i don't think any of you (or me!) are cheap - anyone i know spends around $100 per gift, tops. i have some friends that are pretty well off, and love to flaunt their $$, and they don't even spend more than that! lol but i don't want you all to feel cheap. i think glenda just runs w/the high rollers! lol - hell, i don't care who i offend, i wont' be giving $1000 to anyone!

Oh no! I am so sorry if I offended anyone. I by no means think anyone is cheap. I honestly have no idea what is considered standard that is why I ask. I was just told by people around me that $150 is considered standard per person. But you all have to understand that the cost of living in New York is so high. My FI called me today to complain that he spent $14 on a smoothie shake in NYC. It is just so expensive. The weddings I have been to I have only seen people give envelopes. Usually people only buy off the registry for engagement parties and bridal showers. By the time the wedding comes almost everything has been purchased off the registry. Thank you for all your input and I am sincerely sorry if I came off as a snobby biatch, that was not my intention. You guys know I love you and I would never intentionally hurt someone. smile72.gif

Wow! I guess I'm part of the cheap crowd! I normally give approx $75-100 gifts, a little more for good friends.

Glenda, this is just one more reason why I want you to crash my wedding. Honey, if you bring $1000 gifts, heck- even $300 gifts!- you can join us anytime, anywhere! lol
