Canadian Brides - Name Change Question

Recommended Posts

Just so you know, you don't need to change your passport untill it expires, its still legal to use it in your maiden name, just book your tickets that way. I didn't see the point in paying $85 to renew it when it was good for another 4 years :) So I will get a new one next year when it expires :)

LOL!! I just realized NOW that you quoted me! Wow am I out of it.
Sorry about that!!

That's what I've been doing Julie!! I just like my new name & don't like having to use my maiden name anymore! And now I'm all facked up...someone will ask my name (for verification on an account, or something) and I have to tell them 2 names because I'm not sure which one they have anymore! I'm going through some seriously identity issues! rofl.gif

For the BC ladies - I got married in mexico two weeks ago, and I went today to get my drivers license changed (having heard some people got away without translating anything) and the lady told me right away it had to be translated. I was so sad. They gave me a list of people who are certified to do it and I called one. He said it would be between 60 and 70 dollars.. blech. And this isn't even technically my 'legal' one which should be here in two months, but I'm taking it to him anyways. So much effort. I now have it changed at the bank, who brought up all sorts of domino like issues (cheques being written to me in maiden name, me writing cheques with maiden name, not matching my visa with my drivers... ick.) Just want to get it all out of the way.

My visa does not match my drivers's license, I haven't changed that yet because its such a PITA. I get cheques in my mainden name still and they still cash them. I have not written cheques in my maiden name though, why would you? I have honestly had zero problems so far and I got married in 07. So I would not stress about it, at all. My passport is also still in my maiden name.

Strange, mine only cost $50. Interesting that they gave you a list of names. When I went to the Expressway in my area, they gave me the contact information for Society of Translators and Interpreters of British Columbia and said the translator has to be registered by ICBC. I chose the closest one to me who's rate is $0.15/word with a minimum charge of $50. Our wedding certificate only had 192 words (yes I counted).

If cost is important to you, I'd check around. I also went to the Service BC office in my area to change my DL. I received my new one in less than 5 business days.

I also took my notarized translation document to my bank and they accepted it without any problems. I'm thinking now that it wasn't needed to be notarized but I wanted to be on the safe side. I ordered new cheques and changed my name for everything, including my VISA, but I'm still waiting for that one.

OMG! This is such a helpful thread!!!   It answers a lot of my questions but I have a few more...

What if we're having a Catholic ceremony abroad? and I think we have to have a civil wedding prior to as well?  I can't tell you how confusing this whole process is... from gathering all the documents, translations, wedding certificate, marriage licence, the list goes on and on......

I've been back from mexico about a week and have had no trouble changing my name. I took the certificate they gave me after the wedding which is in spanish and not notarized and so far I've had no trouble...even at service bc to get my dl changed. They didn't need it translated or anything. They said it looks enough like a marriage cert and has our names clear so I haven't had any trouble which is a relief.
