Yeah - the passport thing can be a pain for some. Eventually they will come around. My dad initially said that he wasn't going. He did end up going and could now be an ambassador for Puerto Vallarta. He LOVED it.

I'm in the process of the "convincing" talk right now - I'm really hoping mine will budge but they still don't like the destination wedding idea. I know it is hard - just don't give up! After all it is your wedding, not your parents!

to further piss me off his mom makes a comment that she doesn't fly.. its your sons wedding!!

Luckily both of our parents were cool with it from the beginiing...but remember it's your day and you need to do what is best for you and FI

We had the same type of initial reaction from my fiance's mother. Finally, after about 5 months, she has come around once she realized that we were not going to change our minds.

One thing we are doing that I think may have helped is getting legally married here. We will keep that to immediate family only, and this way his grandmother will be able to attend this so I think that made his mom happy. Also this way we won't have to deal with the hassle of getting the documents translated into Spanish, etc.

Regarding passports, we made sure to put all of the information and links of how to obtain one on our website, hopefully that will help guests.

It can be tough, but stick to your guns and remember that ultimately, it's your and fiance's day! Hopefully they will come around.

How long have you been engaged and talking to them about a DW? I had to talk to my parents a bit to convince them also, but then they started to get excited once they realized it it what we really wanted. They will come arund

We have been together for 6 years...engaged for 6 months and mentioned destination for the past 3 months.

I guess we didn't do a good job of making it clear that we are getting married here first. I think I will mention that to both parents today. I will definitely let my immediate family members like my older aunts and uncles know as well.

I would be careful with picking a place for this reason only. I am getting married in the DR which does not require a passport - but I encourage all of my guests to get theirs. What happens if 2 weeks before departure its required?? I especially considered this since our wedding is in January & legislation like that tends to become effective at the beginning of a new year. If it takes this to convince FI & your family then go with it - but just keep this in mind!

Just an idea, in case you have to pull off the grand compromise.

Florida or the Outter Banks. I have recently seen some kickass weddings at these places where they rented a beach house. It was economical and if FMIL won't fly, she can drive her ass down there... end of story. Then you and DH can honeymoon in Dominican. Just an idea.

 

I know that this sucks. We went through some protest too... not from the parents, but it still hurts I know.
