My fiance and I just got back from the Mayan and we felt completely safe the whole time. We bussed around between towns and never payed more than 40 dollars per night for accomodation. We ate in a few seedy (but delicious!!) places and walked around at night. Never had a problem. I say use your common sense and listen to your intuition!
