we just returned from our wedding at the Pardisus. My DH was born in Alberta and I here in Ontario. We were required to bring long versions of our birth certificates only and as set out above, have four witnesses sign the paperwork with us. Before we left we already had all our legal documentation from the judge to bring back with us.

This is a time consuming and expensive little process, because I also am required by our resort (Bahia Principe Tulum) to jump through all these hoops. The long form birth certificate was 65$ to be rushed and to take the documents to a translator and have them notarized is 300$. I then have to take them to the embassy to get them stamped, and who knows how much that is going to cost....YIKES!

In bride case, she must present :

The above documents plus :

 

1). - Apostilled certificated copy of the birth certificated, translated into Spanish ( long version)

note, the apostilled birth certificated and the translation into Spanish must be with the stamp from the Mexican Embassy to can be valid and acceptable,

 

If you would like to legalize your documents through the Hotel

1). - Once you get married here, will receive an Certificate (official document)

2). - Couple need to come back with wedding coordinator after the wedding date with the marriage act to make copy of Certificate and will send it to Chetumal to the "Apostille", this will takes around 3 months and will have a charge of $70.00 USD + $50.00 USD (120 usd estimated) for the sending of the documents to Canada by DHL, FEDEX (This delivery charge is subject to change according to the company that we use to send the documents)

In this form can legalize your marriage at country once receive these legal documents, or can ask before to come in the Mexican Embassy in your Country If they can do it through them

 

And in case the Judge will send me a notification about more or differents documents, I´m going to let you know asap,

You may want to edit your first post (we can't edit them ourselves as of a couple months ago, but you can ask one of the mods to do it for you) to specify that not all resorts require the long birth certificate, and that some who do don't require it to be translated. I wouldn't want some girl about to get married freak out because she didn't do all that stuff (if it's not required from her resort). Also, this could be a good way to inform girls about this difference among resorts so that they can consider it a factor. I know when I was resort hunting a year ago I didn't hear anything about resorts requiring all this paperwork, and if I had known that some resorts did require it it definitely would have been a factor in my resort choice.

I agree, if I had known when I was selecting a resort that some resorts require more paperwork than others, it would have been a HUGE deciding factor for me. Not because I'm lazy but because I'm sure I would miss something and screw it all up anyway. At least the thread is here now so future brides will have a reference when they are looking up resorts.

So far we know that the following resorts do not require notarization, authentication, or translation of documents:

- Iberostar Paraiso Del Mar/Beach
- Paradisus Riviera Cancun
- Dreams Tulum

And the resorts that DO require translation, authentication, legalization (etc etc):

- Iberostar Paraiso Lindo/Maya
- Gran Bahia Principe Tulum
- The Royal Playa Del Carmen

I'm sure the list is much more larger than this, but at least we know about the ones mentioned above. Hopefully more ladies will post their resort's req's and maybe we could have a master list stickied somewhere? Just throwing it out there, I think it would be really helpful to us DW n00bs haha.

It's so frustrating because now I am considering getting the legal done here before we go, but that's not what I want...I just don't know if I can afford the added cost of doing the rest of it...I was kinda at my max budget.

I'm really sorry to hear about that, I had no idea how expensive all that stuff was until I looked in to it some more I know what you mean, I was going to do the JoP thing here and do a symbolic ceremony down there if it came down to it. Hopefully everything turns out for you in the end though!

Mayabride2009 - I also am now thinking about doing the legal stuff here in Canada and it's not really what I wanted either! I always knew about the added cost but am not looking forward to all of this extra paper work (and I am especially afraid of missing something or doing something wrong!)

 

I find it really interesting that different resorts in the same area can have such different requirements. I wish that I had looked into this more before-even though I am very happy with my resort choice.

Thanks for all of your support! My FI wanted to go to the JOP here in the first place to save money, but I convinced him that it wouldn't be the same for me (every bride is different) so he said his favorite wedding line "whatever makes you happy" but now I am having such a hard time convincing him of the extra costs which are over $300. I know that is not a ton of money, but it is more than I was expecting.

 

We are also planning on a 2 month van trip and so I wanted this all delt with before i go, but now we are down to 3 weeks and I hope I don't worry about it the whole time I am gone!

 

Sorry to be such a pooper today...just frustrated!

 

I emailed my WC at the resort and asked her to lay out in steps exactly what I have to do to make this happen...I want to make sure that what I think I have to do and what she says in steps are the same thing...If I can get rid of even one of them I would be so happy!
