Giving Up Carbs?

Recommended Posts

Casey: FH and I are currently on the South Beach diet. We are now in phase 2 where we reintroduce good carbs. Fruit, oatmeal, high fiber cereal, whole grain stuff. Phase 1 is 2 weeks, it sucks because there is not a good variety but once you are through that Phase 2 is cake. I have lost 9lbs in phase 1. I suggest buying the book and following the recipes, you never eat the same dinner twice and they are easy to make. Nice part is you eat tons of fresh veggies! Let me know if you have any questions.

carbs have gotten a bad reputation, when they are an important part of a healthy diet.

I agree with the advice of switching to good carbs. i personally don't like whole wheat pasta, so I've been getting this barilli plus pasta. we get whole wheat bread.

i highly recommend bob green's the best life diet. i've been reading it lately & it's great. the plan is so healthy & doesn't look like it will be hard to follow.

What is important to remember too is how your body breaks down simple vs. complex carbohydrates. Complex (or good carbs) like whole wheat breads and pasta often are packed with nutirents, lower calories and keep you feeling fuller longer. Simple carbs (like white bread, anything with sugar) turn to glucose quickly in your body and aren't very filling - so you eat more.

If you are going to give up anything I would recommend simple carbs as others have suggested!

ohhh moma loves her carbs, i could never give them up! hm maybe thats why i now have cellulite thighs!

BUT i have recently started eating wheat pasta, instead of eating bread all the time i will use diff type wraps. i love bread too much so i cant completely cut it out but the wraps can be just as good. and if i do eat mashed potatoes (which is a lot) i will just take a small portion instead of the entire pot ;oP

also whats really good are lettuce wraps. sounds blah but it was yummy. i made ground turkey, seasoned it really good, and wrapped it in a lettuce leaf with some onion and i cheated with one piece of fat free cheese. a few times ive make turkey blt lettuce wraps too. it all depends on what you like ya know. u could have a side of apple sauce or yogurt. there are so many things to do when watching what you eat but its just so hard to stick to it right? argh i hate it. i want a rockin bod for maui and so far- NADAAA has changed. my belly went down alil but i NEED to start burning carbs so my legs slim down.

good luck with it, im sure you'll do great!

  • 1 month later...

I am also doing the South Beach Diet. I lost 12 pounds in a month and a half. I am still not eating sugar and haven't reintroduced all carbs, but I do eat some. The cravings for carbs stop after about a week. It's amazing how quickly the weight falls off when you are only eating the right things. I highly recommend the SB diet though...I have the books and know a lot about it if you have any questions.

Hey Casey, As a Registered Dietitian, I have to put my two cents in :)

Most of what the other ladies have said is true...carbs are an important part of a healthy diet. It is not healthy to eliminate entire food groups (starch, fruit, vegetables, dairy- ALL have carbs) Of course, some are better than others like the whole grain/high fiber stuff and fruits and vegetables. Eliminating simple carbs (things that turn to glucose quickly) is probably a good idea since most of those foods contain very little nutritional value.

Keep in mind, without carbs in your diet..you will not only affect your digestive system (as someone else mentioned), but, also your brain!! Glucose is the main fuel for your brain...without you might start getting really moody and irritated often..probably not the best time for that since you're probably gonna be under a lot of stress as it is (at least I know I will! :))

Anyway, that's it for all my rambling! Good Luck!
