Receiving checks as wedding gifts?

Recommended Posts

We have started receiving wedding gifts in the mail in forms of cheques. They are not post-dated, and made out to either Francis or myself.

Our question: when do you cash them? Do we wait until after the wedding [three months]? We are fine with this, but are concerned that maybe people would not have budgeted for the cheque coming out of their account so late, so it might go NSF or place them in a fininical hardship.

Or, right before we leave so that the money can be in our account for Mexico?

Or, after the wedding?

However, I assume that we send out the thank you card right away, no matter if we cash it right away or not, correct?

I would definately cash the checks now. If people sent you checks and did not post date them, then they are planning for the money to come out of their accounts now.

I would send a thank you right away, unless you were planning on doing personalized thank you cards with a picture from your wedding on the. I think people will understand if you don't send the thank you card right away since your wedding is still 3 months away.

I used to work for a bank and I can tell you cash them now for 2 reasons.

1. Like the others have said people expect the money to leave their account and budget that way.

2. Each bank is different but after a certain amount of time checks are considered stale dated if they have not been cashed or deposited and the bank will not accept them. They will tell you to have them write you a new check.

FH and I set up a free checking account when we got engaged with both our names on it. We got lots of engagement money and deposited it into that account. We used it for new furniture/wedding needs throughout the year. Just send your thank yous as you get the gifts though.
