FI wants to move to USVI!

We've been discussing this for a few days now and finally yesterday during FI's birthday dinner he brought it up again that he seriously wants to do this. He said he wants to move to either St. John or St. Thomas for a year or so.. Since we never lived out of Jersey he wants to experience something different for a lil while before we have kids. I'm extremely close to my family so I'm having a hard time agreeing to this..even if it's for a year. I actually started crying during dinner as he talked to me about it. He's like,"Wow, I didn't think you'd get this emotional." I'm so torn bc I know it's an experience of a lifetime and at the moment we have the money to keep our house here in Jersey and still get a place down there.. but I just can't see myself leaving my family and friends behind. I dunno.

What would you do?

oh jenny! i would totally do it! you can always go home to visit, and you could rent out your place to a buddy for a year and make some money off it. later when you guys have a billion kiddos, you probably wont be able to do something like that as easy, so do it now while you are young and kid-free!

it sounds like an amazing adventure!

(wait.... do they have internet there? we dont want you to be without BDW!)

EDIT: doug and i have been talking about how much we'd like to move to so-cal, but his kids are at the age that we cant easily do it right now. as soon as they are closer to being out of school we might take the plunge and try somewhere new for a year or so too!

Oh I say go for it! That sounds so exciting and I know you said you are close to your family but you don't want to miss out on this experience! You'd be surprised at how it will make you and FI closer and even you and your family because they'll be so happy you did something for yourself that challenged you and made you grow as a person!

My vote: DO IT!!!!!!!!!!

I would SO do it! One year isn't very long! And like everyone said, you can always visit home or even better they can visit you!! Trust me, once you have kids it is impossible to do stuff like that. Now with my stepson I have to find a freakin' babysitter to go shopping by myself!!! I think it would be so fun!

i would do it in a heartbeat!!! a year is not that long and think about easy it will be to convince family and friends to visit when you are living in paradise!!

I think its just being out of my element.. he wants to totally do the "island living" and I'm not crazy about it. I know it'll be so amazing..just scared of being more homesick than I anticipate. We have a friend that lives on St. John and he LOVES it. I don't think he comes up to Jersey unless completely necessary lol

and Abbie, luckly for me, Greg is a stock day trader so he needs to have the best internet speed for him to work wink.gif I won't go without having internet. I couldn't imagine not being on BDW at least once a day hahahaha

You aren't interested in island living?! The beach, ocean, flowers, drinks, sun, OMG Jenny!!! I don't believe it for a minute. Can you even imagine the tan you will have?! I always said if I win the lotto the first thing I am doing is buying a house on an island somewhere and never coming back lol. But do what is right for you sweetie. You don't want to be miserable if that is even possible in the USVI

Yea that stuff sounds great and I'm all for the sun and blue waters. What kind of job can I get? Greg said I could waitress or bartend or something. I'm also scared about hurricanes lol And being from Jers, we're always in a hurry for everything.. I don't know how to slow down lol

I am sure there are a ton of resorts you could get a job at. I know what you mean about slowing down. We got engaged, got boobs, bought a house, got married and became full time parents all in six months!! But just remember you only live once and better to try something out and not like it then to never try it and never know. If you are TOTALLY against it though just tell him it's not for you and he will have to deal.
