Dress Shopping on Saturday

Recommended Posts

Yay, I'm so excited, I get to go dress shopping on Saturday! I went once already the day after I got engaged my mom was super excited so we went dress shopping just for fun. THIS TIME, however, we are going to actually look! Yaaaay!

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone has a sort of guideline for body types? Also, are there any good tips that I should know when looking for "the one"? I need all the help I can get, I'm pretty style-challenged!

Don't worry, Tammy - If the salon will let me, I'll get pictures!!

The Knot has a couple of good articles about body shapes. Apparently I'm not smart enough to add a link (duh), so I'm attaching a pdf copy.

I would recommend that you keep an open mind & not just focus on what you think you want.

I tried on a bunch of dresses that the store employee suggested, even if I thought they were horrid. The lady who was helping me had a lot of helpful advice about what would look good on me & I was glad that I trusted her. The dress I ultimately chose was one that she picked out & it wasn't what I initially thought I wanted.

Good luck! I'm sure you'll have a great time!

definitely try on a few different styles, even if you don't think they're right for you. you never know! worst thing that happens is that you're right! lol

my mistake - i always went in the morning, or before eating a meal. by the time i had tried on a few dresses i was tired and hungry, and nothing looked good!

I agree with what is already posted, try on every style. When I was looking I wanted simple and light, I also found a dress that I almost got that I would have NEVER thought would look good on me. So just have fun and try on as much as you can, besides you will miss trying on dressses after you decide on one, so enjoy this time.

I agree...try on lots of different styles. Something that you don't think will good on you, might be the perfect dress for you.

I'm also style challenged. My advice is to trust yourself. Sometimes you might have too many people with you sharing their opinion and it is easy to be swayed by what theses people think. So, really try to tune in to how you feel about the dress. You have to love it....you're the one who will be wearing it.

Good luck and have fun! We'll be here waiting to see your pictures (assuming you're permitted to take some).

Yay, ya I'm excited. Did you girls all go right to the DW dress section, or did you literally try on everything, regardless of how heavy it might be?

I like the advise about not getting caught up in everyone else's opinions, Jess. I could see myself listening to everyone and thinking "oh ya, that is neat/cool/pretty". I definately won't buy on Saturday even if I think I've found the one! I'd have to sleep on it, and try it again after a few weeks to make sure it really is the one!

Thanks ladies for the advise! :)

The other girlies are right about trying every style. I had picked a very simple beaded gown and when my mom came, she was happy with what I chose....but we had given ourselves a couple hours to dress shop, so for fun, we decided to try on "poofy" dresses. I came out of the dressing room, and my mom started crying...I looked at myself and was blown away!!! I got that dress instead! Totally unlike my origional taste in dresses! I still love it!!

You will know when you find the right one....in the meantime....have fun shopping! One of the best things about being engaged!!

Good luck!

Ok - I could be a professional wedding gown wearer! That was so much fun.

So, we started in downtown Calgary at a pretty popular place. For me, the fun of dress shopping last time was having the girl bring us all kids of styles I never saw when I was looking, or styles she think would look good on me. This first place was horrible - we saw the girl maybe twice in the hour we were there, and ended up leaving a little disappointed...

But, we still continued on to a less known place in Calgary - it was way less busy, and the girls there were SO much help. I went there thinking I knew the style I wanted (something light and simple), but ended up falling in love with a big poofy dress (picture below). It's satin, so quite a bit hotter, but it looked really nice. Poofy dresses made me feel like a princess! :)

I won't be getting it right away. I want to keep looking for a few more months, but I'm now leaning more towards the poofy dresses - and I will be keeping this dress in mind to compare with.

This is the dress I tried on (in ivory). It's the complete opposite from what I thought I'd love! Its still nice and simple, but I felt like a fairytale princess. :)

That dress is SO pretty! Haha! You fell victim to the whole poofy dress too! I know exactly how you feel! That dress that you picked is really similar to the one I am going to wear!! That is great that you had so much fun picking dresses!!!
