Packing Gown for Airplane

For those of you who carried your dresses on board, were they considered your only carry on or did you also have a bag with you?

Good Question i would like to know if that counts as your carry on as well

I had my dress AND a purse on the way there...
On the way back, since people had brought us gifts (which we weren't expecting!) and they took up room in our luggage, I ended up carrying quite a large bag along with my dress and it was fine...
(we flew Continental, so not sure if other airlines may be more strict...)

I'm flying Transat and I am allowed to have my gown on board as an ADDITIONAL carry-on along with my other carry-on...pretty sweet!
