How do I stop my Dog from Eating Blankets??

We have a 7 1/2 month old chocolate lab. Most of you have probably seen pics posted on here, but here he is again.

 

 

He is a lab...so he is known for his chewing. But he will not stop eating the blankets & beds we put in his crate!!! Is there anything I can do to stop him from doing this?? Can I use that spray that you use on walls & furnture (Apple Bitters)?? He keeps eating them & then it makes him sick & he throws up blanket balls (instead of hair balls!). He is pretty good with everything else...we keep a pretty close eye on him...but when he's in his crate I guess it's fair game!!!

What a cutie! We've got a 6.5 YO chocolate lab and are about to get him a little sister.

 

They are known for chewing! Harley stopped chewing on his blankets once he was out of the crate, about a year. Now, he just licks everything! Our blankets, the couch, the floor...I don't think there is enough of that spray to cover my entire house!

 

I would give it a shot, or simply take the blankets out. There are some nice cage beds you can buy as an alternative.

Thanks Erin...I bought him a cage bed...well...a cage pad anyway. I didn't want to spend too much money because I figured he would eat it...and sure enough...he did!! I don't want to take the blankets out because there is a gap between the floor & he crate (because there is supposed to be a pan in there - which he doesn't need). I dont' think he would be very comfy...besides...he would just move the crate (yes...he does this) to our bed & chew on our blankets!! He's such a trouble maker!!! But oh so cute!

I'll ask FI he's a dog trainer in the army lol I stopped my rottie I cracked her everytime she did it she start stopped lol

well, i'm trying to type but my cat keeps opening the calculator on my computer....

 

have you tried the apple bitters? we spray that on wires that our eddie bites. or teething toys? we use straws for the cats - is there anything comparable for dogs?

btw, your puppy is ADORABLE!

Im of no help, but I feel your pain Bachata! Im pretty sure our 5 year old Golden Retriever has a mental deficiency... she likes the apple bitters. We sprayed it on her tail, because the dolt still chases and yes, eats her tail. Even with all kinds of that spray on it!! Im positive the 3 cats are thinking "what an idiot" when she does it. Good luck to ya, and pass on anything that works!

Ok I spoke to FI and he said you have to catch him doing it and tell him off tap his nose or his bum. You have to make him feel guilty and worried he's gonna get wrong. FI said treat him like a kid but you have to be firm. Hope that helps x

Oh, cute doggie. I used to work at an animal shelter, and we just took their blankts away when some dogs tear them up (many do).You can get a plastic crate and forgo the blankets and alternate lots of different chewtoys and Kongs. Our dog trainer recommends the book "Don't shoot the dog" by Karen Pryor and "The Culture Clash" by Jean Donaldson.
