How Did your FI ask for your hand?

Recommended Posts

There are so many wonderful engagement stories on here that I wanted to hear how your FI asked your dad/mom for their blessing. I think it is a really special time for your family and your FI.

I will start with my story.

On June 4th I received a phone call that my boyfriend had fallen 25 feet and was in hospital, it was a very scary day in my life. We had been dating for 8 years and there were alot of family/friend jokes to him about if he was ever going to ask me to marry him...he was certainly taking his time.

Over the next week I stayed by his bedside for 16 hours a day driving 3 hours everyday to the hospital and back. By the grace of God his spine and head were not injured, however he had a broken pelvis, fractured foot and horribly smashed elbow joint. In the next 2 weeks he had 2 surgeries on his elbow. My father drove to the hospital to wait with me both times he was in surgery. After Chris came out of the second surgery he asked if I would go to the car and get him some flavored water. I thought it was kind of strange but he had just come out of surgery so off I went.

This is when he decided to ask my dad for his blessing. He told my father that he felt so lucky to have me and he loved me deeply and wanted to marry me. After 8 years of dating, my dad gave his blessing and told him he would be honoured to have him as a son. The next day my dad came back to make sure that he was really serious once the anesthetic had worn off! Chris told him that the accident had made him realize that I was the most important thing in his life.

2 months later when Chris was able to walk again he took me away for the weekend and proposed on a beautiful cliff side just after sunrise. He presented me with a ring that he and my father had worked together on.

That is such a great story!!!! It great that something so wonderful could come from something that I am sure must have been so difficult to go through.

My story is really nothing to out of the ordinary. My FI and I had been dating for 5 years and I too felt like he was taking his good old time, but he told me that every time I mentioned it, I just pushed it off further. He wanted to surprise me and if I was talking about it all the time he felt I'd be expecting it. I had also dropped hints on how I wanted him to propose and he vowed to never do it "my way" and plan his own way. In March 2008 my parents invited me, my FI and our son to go on vacation with them to Disney World in June. We were able to get the time off and officially booked the trip in April. As soon as the trip was officially booked, he went and spoke to my parents and told them that he wanted their blessing to propose while on vacation. I had always wanted it to happen at Cinderella's Castle and he figured since he vowed to never do it my way, that I would never be expecting it, and he was right. He kept my parents very involved in the whole process, including ring selection and when he asked me to marry him on June 6, my mom and dad, my brother and my son where all there with me and it made it that much more special. So thats my story.

i'm not really sure! i've asked, but dh isn't the kind of person to divulge a lot of info. i know that he called them at a time when he knew my mom would be at work and my dad would be home. he set up a plan to ensure that my parents would be waiting for us at the restaurant a few hours after we got engaged elsewhere.

On the way back from us working in D.C. we stopped of at my parents house for a week. FI and I had only been together for like a month at that point. We took a trip to Hot Springs, AR to go shopping at all of the antique stores. There is this shop there that I LOVE, they have royal crowns, old doors from China/Japan etc. We looked through for awhile and I fell in love with this necklace that was $3,000. Needless to say that was out of my price range. We went to breakfast but had to wait, and FI said he needed something from the car, so my dad went with him to unlock the car. They got back and we had breakfast and went shopping. That evening we had dinner on the dock at Fisherman's Warf (Fisherman's Wharf Steak & Seafood). FI and my dad went out onto the actual "dock" and talked for a bit. That night we crawled into bed and he said he got me something, I didn't know what but then he gave me the box and turned on the light. It was the necklace!!!! The next morning I showed it to my parents (my dad knew). Apparently I'd been carrying the necklace in my camera bag all day and didn't even know!

Anyhow, it's kind of a cute memory - and lots of warm fuzzies for Hot Springs.

Maybride- I think that it's ironic that your fiance propsed to you on a cliff after falling 25 ft! Made me chuckle.

My mom was visiting from the East Coast and my fiance wanted to ask for her approval then- but he came down with a bad cold and couldn't. But after reading your story about how your fiance asked your father's permissin bed-ridden, I have one word to say to my finace- WIMP!

Nah, just kidding.
