UGA fans, have a questions for you.

My husband & I went to the Arizona State/Georgia game on Saturday & I saw the most peculiar thing at a college football game: the Georga ladies were all wearing black dresses & big-plastic red jewelry. Now folks, it was 102* outside & my first thought does not include dressing up for a football game where I'll be sweating my ass off.

 

I attempted to ask one lady bulldog what the deal is with the dresses, but she was far from sober & her response was that the "dresses go with the jewelry"........ok. So, I ask my friends on BDW, does anyone know what the deal-i-o is?

 

One of my friends thought it might be a sorority thing, but the woman I asked has passed that prime age awhile ago.

at texas A&M some girls really dress up. dates of the guys in the corps of cadets often do. my friend bought a new dress for every game when she was dating a corps guy.

 

the most dramatic are the yell leaders dates. they wear high heels and all when we are standing the entire game.

 

the university of texas girls get dressy too, but in a different way. they often wear trendy burnt orange outfits.

 

there is really a mix. i always wore a maroon t-shirt & the most comfortable pants/ shorts with comfortable shoes. but other girls go all out. i mean, some dress up more than i even do on my dressiest nights out.

I guess it is a southern thing. I hope I don't offend anyone, but it looked ridiculous at a football game. I don't get it. Anyhoo, thank you for all the responses ladies.

As a University of Georgia graduate, I think one word summarizes why the girls were dressed up for the football game you attended...tradition.

 

Southern girls want to look "classy" at the football games sometimes because they have been tailgating with a prespective boyfriend's family and want to make a good impression and other times because what better place is there to meet guys than a college football game:-)

 

I found a great quote on the internet that sums up football in the South:

 

"In the East, college football is a cultural exercise. On the West Coast, it is a tourist attraction. In the Midwest, it is cannibalism. But in the South, college football is a religion, and every Saturday is a holy day." – Marino Casem, Alcorn State University

 

That basically says it all. Some people dress up for church. Southern girls dress up for football.

I disagree with the quote (coming from the midwest & graduating from a Pac-10 school), but better understand what I witnessed now. Thanks.

 

And your fans were really considerate (for the most part....the one exception was a young "lady" in said black dress) & we even tailgated with a few folks who were very nice. Can't say that'd happen for a Pac-10 rival.
