Tip Your Hairdresser

I went to get my hair cut and highlighted yesterday. I really like the girl, but never know how much to tip her. The total was $200. Is there a percentage or some etiquette of what to tip your hairdresser?

I usually tip 25%. i don't know where i got that percentage from, i guess i do that because 20% is what i usually tip for everything and she always does a great job so i give her a little more.

OK... I didn't give her enough... should I go back and tip her more or maybe wait till next time? I'm so bad at this stuff!

I would not go back and tip her, just give her a bigger tip next time.

I also usually tip around 25% bc I love the girl who does my hair. I also would not go back and give her a tip I would tip her bigger next time.

I think the normal range of 15-20% applies to everything (including hairstylists), not just restaurant servers.

 

I personally don't tip in percentages anymore, sometimes it works out to be too much, especially at fancy restaurants (i.e. I'm tipping the person more than I make in an hour even thought their total service to me took less than an hour!). It annoys me that it costs so much to eat out, and yet servers make insane amount of money in tips (like 100$ in a 4 hour shift) with no education or specialized training. And this is coming from a former waitress, but I worked at a family diner and I was happy to get like 2-5$ tip per table, not 10-20$. (Sorry for the rant there!) I personally usually tip my stylist 5$ for a cut and 10-15$ for cut and highlights, which I guess is about 10% of what it costs me (actually closer to 15% as I see a stylist who works from home and has awesome prices). But honestly, if I went to a really expensive salon that charged 200$ for highlights I would still tip 10$ even though that was only work out to be 5% (yikes!). I guess I feel that just because a person (or restaurant) charges more doesn't necessarily mean I should have to tip a lot more. So in percentage terms I am much more likely to tip generously when the overall price is cheaper.

 

Anyways, I'm sure whatever you tipped is fine. A tip should be a bonus and not expected. You have no reason to feel bad.

Tips are always appreciated! I'm a hairdresser, so when I get a tip in any amount I know that they love what I do. My following is of all different people from when I just started to new people... sooo with 9 yrs you've got everyone.. some don't have as much but will pay more for the Spa I work in now just for me to cut their hair.

 

You would be surprised how many don't even think about it. If your a booth renter they know all the money goes into your pocket... so some people just don't bother... and others when you work hrly at a place... IE: mall chains and such ... they don't bother 2 because you are a mall girl.

 

Just tip her more next time you are in ... you love her and she always does a great job right?? Surprises are nice... so isn't XMAS... I get a full stock of wine right around then too ... yummy... LOL

I woulda tipped $20 for that. I pay $120 for my hair and tip usually $15.

That's what I did... $20... but then I left and thought about it and confused myself. I feel so much better now.
