Any advice

Hi, my parents are coming with us to Rui Ocho Rios, they are both in their 70's, could anyone let me know if there will be enough for them to do. They don't sunbathe and neither of them can swim. I am a bit worried that they will be bored.

My grandparents went there 10 years ago when they were in their 70s and had a lot of fun..mind you they did swim in the pool, but there were lots of other activities that they were able to do..and they did a lot of excursions.....they are coming back with us this year when i get married and they are now in their 80s!

Hi,

I have been to many of the Riu resorts (as well as other DW locations) and I would have to say that 95% of the activities revolve around the sun, pool, and ocean. There are no indoor activities to speak of, unless they want to play cards in one of the cafes or bars. The fun activities take place out at the pool, but they could always sit in the shade.

 

Other than that - sightseeing or walking the streets of the town would be the main attractions, but it depends on how mobile they are. I would definitely share your concern if my parents were not interested in the warm weather activities.

There are a few slot machines in the sports bar, there is bingo almost daily (thought it's only about 30 minutes), they could eat non-stop while they are awake, ummm... would they be interested in watching people play games or swim? How about bringing a crib board and deck of cards? We had some fantastic naps at ROR, make sure to bring a magnet to put on the sliding door latch so the A/C stays on! That's all I can think of, our oldest guests were in the 60's but they like swimming so I can't help much more!

What do you mean by this? Does this trick the AC into thinking that someone is in the room? I have heard that the AC goes off if there is no one in the room...

There's a magnetic latch on the side of the sliding door. The door itself has a magnet on it. When the door is opened and the magnet is no longer in contact with the latch, the A/C turns off. I don't think it has anything to do with people being in the room or not because our room was always plenty cold when we would come back after having been gone for a while.

They do that to stop people like me who have sliding door wide open while the air is on. I love to hear the ocean.

I also have an Aunt in her 80's and a future mother in law in her 70's going to the RIU. I think they will be fine keeping each other company. They also will probably like the nightly shows and any music or activities such as pottery,etc during the day. Or just spending time with other family members and going to breakfast & lunch with family. There also is a botanical graden excursion they may like. It will all work out for you. I don't think they will be bored because the place is beautiful and they will have friends & family with them.
