Well, I just finished my first DIY project. I attempted the message in a bottle save the date. Everything went pretty well, but I did make a few mistakes. Thought I'd share them to help everyone else.

 

1) I bought the new soy wax from Michael's that comes in chips to seal the bottles. I also bought dye and fragrance (ocean breeze). The nice thing about this wax is that you can add the chips to a tuperware and melt it in the microwave. The downside is that if you don't stop every 10 second to mix it gets really clumpy. The first 10 bottles that I did had little white clumps stuck in the wax. Also, I think the soy wax is a little bit greasier and might melt in the mail a little bit.

 

2) I didn't realize that the bottles have to have a full return address. I got all the way to the post office and had to go home to print more labels.

 

3) make sure you put just a tiny bit of sand of they get expensive to mail.

Thanks indeed for the tips! That's weird that the bottles would need a return address label, but it does make sense. Also, do show pics. The whole idea sounds creative.
