Well obviously the main reason for sending out STD's is to give people a heads up, if you are close and speak with everyone that you are inviting and they know whats going on I wouldnt worry about it. I just finished sending out my STD and Im getting married the beginning of June, so I guess it just depends on you situation.

Yep, I agree that you can skip the save the date. Or you can combine them, like send an insert or magnet with the invitation saying "save the date" that they can put on the fridge as a reminder.

I sent the actual invites out 6 weeks before the wedding, but I had done 2 std's months before. In your case I would say to get the invites out asap unless you do a verbal std with all guests. You want to give them as much notice as possible, trust me on that!

I concur with the previous responses - if you communicate your plans to your guests ahead of time, so that they can make plans to attend, then you can go ahead and send out the invitations without having to send out the std's. Happy planning!

I sent save the dates about 2 or 3 months ago and my wedding is 5/26/08. I originally just wanted to do invites and send them early but I did the save the dates because I got all into the boarding pass ones everyone on here was doing.

Now I am deciding whether or not to even send invites because we are in communication with everyone we are inviting and we already know who is going and who is not. PLUS...everyone thought the Save the Dates were the invitations!!!! So who knows.

My point here is that I think one is fine but whichever one, send it out ASAP!

We are getting married Sept 08 and just sent out STD's 2 weeks ago. We included a letter and directed our guests to our website (full of info!).

Then we are planning on sending an 'invite packet' in February to only the guests who are coming to the wedding. (Our deadline for RSVP is Feb b/c our place is so small)

My wedding is at the beginning of May and I did not send out STDs. Like everyone else said, the people that we really want to be there, already know about our plans. Many of them have already booked even though my FI and I have not. I think that is kind of funny. We are both commitment phobes. Oh well.

I think you will be fine with just invitations but don't wait too long. (I should take my own advise. I haven't even started on my invites.) Plus you will save some money by doing invitations only and not both. :)

ok, so i guess i won't bother then. i'm just so worried because we have been talking about this for so long and now it is right around the corner and i still have nothing figured out. i really need to pick a resort! well i guess all the most important people know the basic plan and when so i guess we are good.

wait is it bad to send invites too early?

We haven't sent any STDs out, our wedding is July 08, we are sending the invites out as soon as I can get other half to sort who is who with regards to names to put on the invitations. I have done all of my side of the family but he needs to tell me his. Soon as that's done, invites are going out.

When we first decided on a date, where and when, we sent an e-mail to everyone we knew to let them know, so I suppose that could have taken the place of STDs, you could try that whilst you are getting your invites ready, to give people as much time as you can.
