Going to NYC, what's the best hotel around Times Square?

I'm going to NYC in early November with my wife and family and I need to know what are the absolute best hotels to stay in and around Times Square. I took a trip there almost 4 years ago and stayed in the Marriott Marquis on Times Square but for some reason my mom didn't like it too much and wants to try something new. We're looking for something with a modern feel to it. Can anyone give me some referrals or point me in the right direction?

I stayed at the W Times Square 2 years ago and loved it! It's a bit pricey but very modern and fun atmosphere. And great location!

Either the W or DoubleTree.. There's also Hotel Pennsylvania

Definitely the W Times Square. We stayed there around Christmas time and it is amazing!

 

Extremely modern, a very different feel to it. Our room was spacious considering it is in Manhattan. Great view. The staff was helpful, we upgraded our room with no problems. There is a restaurant/lounge attached to the hotel as well which is convenient.

 

It is definitely not like any other hotel. Very unique.

we always stay at either the W or westin times square. both are nice and modern.
