I did not read through this whole post to see if you figured out what the "rice" was. I use to be a vet tech and they are most definitely tapeworm segments. The tapeworm is in the intestinal tract and releases these segments that are alive until they crawl out and dry up. These segments contain eggs that fleas feed on. Good news is you do not need to worry about the other animals. The only way a mammal acquires a tapeworm is by ingesting a flea that has eaten the eggs. Very gross none the less!
